Thoughts? Would it instantly be shortened to Julie which I don't like?
Anyone know any Juliana's?

Juliet and Julia much nicer, imo.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/01/2022 00:24

Well I wouldn’t call her that if you don’t like the idea of Juiie. Stick to Julia or Juliet. Or Juno,

userxx · 06/01/2022 22:27

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

No one calls you jules ? I'm surprised by that.

Nope, and I actually don't mind Jules but everyone has automatically called me by my full name - I suppose it would be different if I'd introduced myself (or my parents had) as Jules. I don't think it's as automatic a nn as for some names (eg. Liv for Olivia, Sam for Samantha etc).

I like both and happily answer to both. It's been that way forever!

Weenurse · 06/01/2022 22:09

The Juliana I know is either Juliana or Jules.
She does complain about having to spell it all the time as people want to put anna

I love it!

userxx · 06/01/2022 20:47

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

I'm a Julia and really like it - grateful to my parents for their classic and international choice! Smile. I've never been given a nickname at all and anecdotally the couple of other Julia's I've met over the years have been the same. I also really like elegant Juliet, but I don't know if the "Jules" nn is more commonplace for that or not.

Juliana is perhaps slightly "fancy" sounding for me personally (and I've never met one in RL) but Ana is a pretty nn, so I can see why you'd pick it.

Have you guys discussed Mariame or Marianela? Similar to Marianne, but I prefer both to that.

Buddhabowl · 06/01/2022 20:27

I ran it past DH and he said it in a really flouncy elongated way 'Juliaarrrna'
It's the same reaction I got to Gabriella. He hasn't written it off though. He likes Marianne or Daphne, both of which are on the list.

Oh, and I doubt very much that whether you pick Julia, Juliet or Juliana, you'd get Julie as a nn - Julie is a bit dated now in the UK. I've only gotten "Julie" when someone has misheard Julia or made an assumption - generally from older people because it was a popular name years ago (I know a few Julie's aged in their 50's and 60's).

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/01/2022 16:17

Reminds me of Juliana Hatfield too.

Off to google her and see if she's still close to Evan Dando.

Makes me think of Juliana Hatfield.
I love it, but it is a mouthful. Will prob be shortened to jules.
If she's quite shy and retiring she might wish for a shorter name, but you wont know this in advance.

OldWivesTale · 06/01/2022 15:36

Julia or Juliet are nicer

userxx · 06/01/2022 15:33

@KirstenBlest

Dislike it.

Julia is fine. The extra -na ruins it.

This.
PlainJane1000 · 06/01/2022 15:28

I adore Juliana but prefer the pronunciation Juli-arna and know my family would say Juli-anna! I like Jules as a nn.
I know a Juliana whose nn has always been Yanna, it obviously started within the family and that's how she introduces herself.

HunterGatherer · 06/01/2022 13:53

I know a 48yr old Juliana, she's quite famous locally, it is never shortened.

Ellmau · 06/01/2022 13:37

A beautiful name.

Pemba · 06/01/2022 13:15

It's fine, but I find Julia or Juliet much nicer. Juliana is slightly 'too much' in comparison.

Marimaur · 06/01/2022 13:01

Juliana is beautiful, nn Juni?
Might be shortened to Jules, which I think is fine!

Buddhabowl · 06/01/2022 12:56

I quite like the nickname Ana (Arna) I know it's very Frozen but I prefer it to Julie or Jules. I know she will likely end up with one of the Ju nicknames from friends though.

SallyWD · 06/01/2022 12:36

I do like it but much prefer Julia. I don't like "flouncy" names.

EducatingArti · 06/01/2022 12:33

I love Juliana ( shame I haven't got a DD to name as I'd completely be stealing it).
I think the instinctive shortening might be Ju, so it depends on how you feel about that though.

RuthW · 06/01/2022 12:26

I love all 'arna' names. I know one 85 year old Juliana. She hates it and has always been known as Julie.

foxgoosefinch · 06/01/2022 12:05

It’s lovely - I also like Julia (and know a baby one), and Juliet.

It makes me think of Andrew Marvell’s Mower poems - which are addressed to an idealised female figure called Juliana. Literary and elegant!
