Boys Names Shortlist: Help make it shorter!

BlusteringBoobies · 01/01/2022 17:22

Hi all

We are completely stuck on boys names! I'm going to be induced next week with our second DS and we have a short list but don't really have any that we think is 'the one'

We already have one DS who is 2 and has an 'ie' name (think Charlie).

What do people think of the below list? Any favourites or additions along these lines? We want something that is not particularly common (but we both do like Jack!) but not too unusual!

Thanks!

Jack
Mack
Percy
Miles
Morgan
Avery
Hudson
Huxley
Cooper
Ashton
Otis

Jack and Mac will run into your surname I think so I'd knock those off the list.

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/01/2022 19:30

I would shortlist to Morgan, Jack and Otis and see what fits. For what it's worth I have young children and haven't come across a single Jack under 5, though do know an Otis. Love it though

I also love Percy but as a NN for Percival

DotDotDotDotDot · 01/01/2022 19:26

I like Miles and Otis from your list. You could have Cormac with NN Mac.

Biscuitsneeded · 01/01/2022 19:20

Jack is the only one of those I like I'm afraid. But I don't like fashionable names because they date, and all of these sound very American. I actually don't mind Jackson, which might solve your problem of the surname starting with a 'k' sound again.

WhoppingBigBackside · 01/01/2022 19:10

Anyone who doesn't remember Ivy Tilsley/Brennan, she wss horrible.

WhoppingBigBackside · 01/01/2022 19:08

@BlusteringBoobies, Seth and Archie are Emmerdale Farm names so I can't see the appeal.

Percy in Corrie was ok, but names like Ivy and Audrey are def Corrie names

Pointing Percy at the porcelain - do people still say that?

Ladybird900 · 01/01/2022 18:51

Miles is gorgeous, I’d definitely go with that.

Also quite like Jack, Avery, Mack and Otis.

octopuseyes · 01/01/2022 18:44

@IWasFunBeforeMum

I've got a Jack..classic strong name perfect for a boy or man.
Good point. Name hasp to carry them through whole life Perhaps op would consider Jackson? Could be shortened and it's got that modern feel??
BlusteringBoobies · 01/01/2022 18:41

@WhoppingBigBackside I am an older mum and remember Percy in Corrie very well!!

And I've just looked up 'Point Percy at the Porcelain' so it's safe to say Percy is out 😂 🍆

Miles and Ashton are the only ones I like from that list. Cooper is ok.

I thought Percy was slang for penis? Defo wouldn't use that!

octopuseyes · 01/01/2022 18:33

I called my son an 'of the moment ' name as it was my husbands turn to choose. I wanted Robert. I wish I'd gone with that. He looks like a Robert or rob- his current name screams 'I was born in 2004'!! Grin

WhoppingBigBackside · 01/01/2022 18:33

@BlusteringBoobies,
Try saying the first name and surname together

Jack Cook/Cooper sounds a bit like Jack Hook/Hooper which might be a PITA.

Mack Keith sounds like McKeith etc

There was Percy Thrower and Percy Sugden, but I'm probably a lot older than your DH

octopuseyes · 01/01/2022 18:27

They seem like very American names apart from jack and Percy....

BlusteringBoobies · 01/01/2022 18:22

Agree about Percy. My DH likes it and have no idea why but I do associate it with a slightly wimpy boy which is completely unfair-There must be a Percy in some form of media who is like this?!

Just scanning through and Miles seems to be the most liked. I felt it might evoke feelings of someone being a bit snobby but again, not sure where I've got that from!! Perhaps Niles from Frasier!

Wow, I'm so pleased I posted. I had no idea about Huxley Pig and I'm an 80s child! It was one I quite liked but absolutely not now 😆 🐷

Not sure if it makes a difference to Jack/Mac (agree it needs to be short of something) but our surname starts with a hard 'k' sound so I'm not sure if Jack/Mac sounds too clunky with it

Jack
Not Huxley Pig!!!!

MaternityNurse007 · 01/01/2022 18:15

Otis, Miles are nice....the rest does not stand out or don't like them at all...i also like Eric 👍

BeKindBeYou · 01/01/2022 18:14

I love these 3!

Miles
Cooper
Ashton

Stunning 😍

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2022 18:10

Jack - will always be Jack Surname
Mack - Mac is ok if short for MacSomething
Percy - not keen
Miles - like
Morgan - Organ
Avery - dislike
Hudson - not keen
Huxley - fine as a surname, dislike as a first name
Cooper- fine as a surname, dislike as a first name
Ashton - fine as a surname, dislike as a first name
Otis - awful

lightupmyface · 01/01/2022 18:09

Jack, Miles or Otis.

custardbear · 01/01/2022 18:06

@Easymeasy

Ashton Miles Cooper
Yep
Luredbyapomegranate · 01/01/2022 18:04

Miles

Jack is overused, Otis is v of the moment and will date. The rest I think are grim (you did ask..)

WaitinginVain · 01/01/2022 17:59

From your list I really like Ashton.

Jack is also quite nice, but as you say a lot more popular. I quite like Morgan as well. Miles and Otis are OK. Not a fan of Hudson but it's fine.

The ones I'm not keen on - don't dislike Mack but it doesn't sound like a proper name to me, more like a nickname. Don't like Avery, Huxley or Cooper. Really dislike Percy and it doesn't fit with the rest of your list either.

Underthestairsbears · 01/01/2022 17:56

Jack - popular but lovely
Mack - prefer Mac
Percy - nice
Miles - dislike, a bit try hard
Morgan - ok
Avery - no
Hudson - I like this a lot
Huxley - 🐷
Cooper - not amazing but fits in with all the Lawson/Mason/Carter names he'll probs be at school with
Ashton - meh
Otis - dislike

How about Rufus or Flynn
