hi, i'm pregnant with a girl and i'm curious what others think about this. My mom passed away 2 months ago... she was my best friend and was so exited for her grand child. I have been thinking about naming my baby after her. Her name was Maureen. i don't know what other people think about this name. what do you think about it?
my due date happens to be on her birthday and i think that's so special. her birthday is May 4th so that could be special as well, to name her May. but her real name seems more special.. what do you think about it? :)

I am so sorry for your loss... It's a lovely name. I don't like May much as I think it's a month's name and not a person's name.

In Greece it's always the way for the kids to be named after the grandparents, alive or not. If kids don't do it then grandparents get offended... :-/

Lalliella · 01/01/2022 18:10

Sorry for your loss OP.

Personally I don’t like the idea of naming babies after someone - they are their own individual and not an extension of that person. Plus the name is slightly old-fashioned. How about Maureen as a middle name?

Pamlar · 01/01/2022 16:26

Sorry for your loss and how lovely to be able to honour your mother
I personally prefer Maura as a more modern but still similar to Maureen

Laureatus · 01/01/2022 01:39

I'm so sorry for your loss, and it's a lovely way to honour your mum. I just thought I'd say, my mum's middle name is May because she was born in May, and she has always felt it was a bit silly - she feels as though it's pointless as she's never going to forget when her birthday is, and she wishes her parents had put more thought into a middle name that had more meaning than 'just' the month she was born in.

LimpLettice · 31/12/2021 17:42

I'd give her the name but use a nickname. Give her a slightly more modern edge so she can revert if she wants to, but also give your little girl her own identity separate from your lovely mum. Reenie, or I love Mimi. Or Maura which is very pretty.

NotTheOriginalFeargalSharkey · 31/12/2021 17:18

Was your mum always Maureen or did she have a nn?
I knew a little girl called ree-nee (no idea on spelling, sorry) girl and name both very cute
Or stuck with Maureen. She won't be one of 5 in her class at schook

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 31/12/2021 16:08

I would give her her own name and identity. And use your Mum’s name as a middle name, it still has a lovely sentiment.

Sorry for your loss. Flowers

DixieSun · 31/12/2021 14:18

Maureen nn Reenie is lovely.

I'm sorry for your loss OP Thanks

LizzieAnt · 31/12/2021 13:55

I'm very sorry for your loss OP.
The Irish language spelling of Maureen is Máirín in case that's an option. I know fadas (the accents) can be tricky in the UK though. It is cognate with Mary as a pp said, Máire (anglicised as Maura, Moira) being the Irish form of Mary. (Also, ín/een literally means little, so Máirín is a pet form of Máire if you like.)

Duxiejhrhrvjz · 31/12/2021 13:33

There is a Youtuber I follow that has a daughter called Mori maybe you could use something similar?

Edenember · 31/12/2021 13:32

Sorry for your loss OP.

I’d personally give her her own name and honour mum as a middle name as others have said. Or Maura which I think is lovely, would be your girls very own individual name but a nod to your mum. I know you’ve mentioned May - the birthstone for May is Emerald and the flower for May is Lily of the Valley - so perhaps Lily or Emerald in there somewhere? There’s also Maia / Maya, Mayana, Maeve / Maeva.

Ultimately go with what feels right for you and congratulations on the impending arrival of your lovely spring baby girl. Love and light

GrendelsGrandma · 31/12/2021 13:31

I like the name Maureen but it's a bit marmite. Did your mum like it herself? Do you like it, beyond the association with your mum? There are lots of different ways to honour your mum, I'd only do this if you objectively like the name.

Maireas · 31/12/2021 13:29

It's a lovely name.
Give it as a first name, it's unusual now and a sweet tribute to your late Mum.
Who knows, you could start a trend!

Skeumorph · 31/12/2021 13:27

It's a lovely idea to honour your mum and I think your little girl would love to share a name with her granny.

BUT. Give it as a middle name. Let your little girl have both - her own name that is all about her, and her granny's name too.

Maureen works well as a middle name with its two syllables.

Sorry for your loss.

ApolloandDaphne · 31/12/2021 13:24

Maureen is a form of Mary so you could use that or Maura which is also lovely?

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 31/12/2021 13:24

Yes. Definitely.

TheTrinity · 31/12/2021 13:21

Very sorry for your loss. If you name your daughter Maureen, it's not impossible for her to be called May as a nickname which I think would be lovely too. I would give her a middle name as well.

Crunchymum · 31/12/2021 13:18

Edited to add, I am sorry for your loss.

FWIW my mum died 15 months ago and I wish I'd given one of my DD's her name (even just as a middle name) but it is quite a nice name. No offence to Maureen of course.

Crunchymum · 31/12/2021 13:14

Maybe her middles names could be Maureen-May

Or you could actually call her May Maureen Surname?

MerryChristmasToYou · 31/12/2021 10:29

sentiment not sentient

BlueShirtGuy · 31/12/2021 09:27

I think it's really lovely.

It's such a nice thing to do and it will give you immense pleasure over the years. I was named after my paternal grandmother and I really like having a name that was so meaningful to my dad and it made me feel ...I don't know...secure maybe. Connected.

MerryChristmasToYou · 31/12/2021 09:21

I like it and the sentient behind it.

Synchrony · 31/12/2021 08:32

I think it's a lovely idea. Not everyone loves the name Maureen but not everyone loves any name. Choose what you love and is meaningful to you.

MojoJojo71 · 31/12/2021 00:03

Sorry for your loss OP.

My DD is named after my mum (Jennifer) so I think it’s a lovely idea, I’m sure she would have been delighted. A lot of old fashioned names are making a comeback but I don’t think I’ve heard of any little girls named Maureen yet.

Youvegotafriendinme · 30/12/2021 23:53

I’m sorry for your loss.
My DM died 3 years ago and when DD was born this year I gave her my mums first name as her middle name. It was important DD had her own name but that my mum wasn’t forgotten either.
