whatausername · 29/12/2021 19:25

Ottilie - fussy and otterly, not very pretty sounding tbh
Margot - fine
Hazel - fine
Daphne - fine and a bit different, some may find it wet
Esme - dull and people get their knickers in a twist re. pronunciation
Willa - sounds half finished and wishy washy
Clara - fine
Honor - "on her", no teenage girl will thank you for the name
Iris - fine, quite nice but will date
Mabel - won't date well

Thevalley · 28/12/2021 20:38

Ottilie twee and faddy
Margot looks like maggot
Hazel frumpy
Daphne hideous! She won't thank you.
Esme nice
Willa absolutely awful
Clara meh
Honor ok
Iris nice
Mabel nice

EishetChayil · 28/12/2021 17:30

Ottilie - horrible. And it will get (inexplicably) popular due to Zoella
Margot - maggot
Hazel - quite sweet
Daphne - ok
Esme - nice
Willa - very nice
Clara - nice
Honor - as long as your surname isn't something that you could be "on".
Iris - dreadful
Mabel - old lady

Hadtocomment · 28/12/2021 13:09

I like Iris, Hazel and Honor.

wishing3 · 28/12/2021 13:00

My daughter’s name is on this list! I like lots of them, but am not keen on Ottilie and Mabel. They sound a bit try-hard to me(sorry to others who’ve used them-can see that the name I chose is not everyone’s cup of tea from responses !).

HuntingoftheSnark · 28/12/2021 12:53

I love the name Ottilie and don't associate it with Mumsnet at all - it reminds me of a short story by John Wyndham. It was one of my top girls' names. I also like Iris and Margot from your list.

WhoppingBigBackside · 28/12/2021 12:44

Ottilie - don't like
Margot - not keen
Hazel - ok
Daphne - ok
Esme - not keen
Willa - don't like

Iris - ok
Mabel - not keen

Hazel, Honor or Iris

Blackberrybunnet · 28/12/2021 11:49

My German penpal was called Ottilie. It was pronounced Oh-teelya. I'm wondering if the same pronunciation is used here?
Never much liked the name anyway.
Mabel - yes
Clara-ok
Iris - bit 1950s housewife, but yes
everything else, no

RuthW · 28/12/2021 11:21

Ottilie - lovely but very popular
Margot - dislike
Hazel - ok
Daphne - lovely
Esme - ok but hate it said Ezmae
Willa - not sure, prefer Willow
Clara - lovely, my fav
Honor - lovely
Iris - ok
Mabel - ok

Edenember · 28/12/2021 09:49

Ottilie - don’t understand the current fad for this. Frilly. That said, I do like Ottoline.
Margot - A bit trendy. Don’t mind it, but not for me.
Hazel - want to love but can’t shake the dowdiness.
Daphne - dislike
Esme - love pronounced Ez-mee. Like pronounced Ez-may.
Willa - Willy. Another one I don’t get.
Clara - Love
Honor - Love
Iris - fine. Used to be on my list but so popular where I am atm, Ivy and Iris are feeling like the new Evie.
Mabel - Been warming to this recently but feel it’s a very go-to hipster name.

IckleBear · 28/12/2021 08:52

I love Ottilie!

This list is one of the most mumsnetty lists I’ve ever seen

Skeumorph · 28/12/2021 01:20

@DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly

Clara and Honor.

I really dislike Hazel, it’s just so ugly and 80s. I imagine a bad perm and blue eyeshadow. Don’t like Willa either, it feels like half a name, wet.

This exactly re Hazel!! It’s suddenly become ‘ok’ but god it’s awful.

Hazel’s best friend is Beverley and they have crap perms and nick cheap jewellery from C&A on a Saturday morning. Then they stand outside HMV and have a fag.

RoseMartha · 28/12/2021 01:09

I like Honor and Clara the best from your list.

Ceramide · 28/12/2021 01:00

I like Willa, Cara, Honor.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/12/2021 00:53

I'm not bothered by popularity as such either OP, but I'm less keen on trendiness, such as the current vintage/retro name trend which most of your choices unfortunately fit - as I would worry they may date more (if mostly only very elderly or very young women have the name). Despite that, I do like the sound of:

Iris - as it's both classical (Shakespearean/Greek Mythology) as much as retro/floral
Clara - such an elegant but pretty sound imo
Esme - ditto, especially the Ez-May pronunciation
Honor - very classy

I don't hate Hazel or Willa either, but Margot, Ottilie, Mabel and Daphne are really not my cup of tea, sorry.

everly · 27/12/2021 23:48

@Bushkin do you mind sharing any other names on your list?

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 27/12/2021 23:46

Hazel and Iris are both very nice. Dont like any of the others very much. Willa and Ottilie are both especially dire.

Wickywoo1984 · 27/12/2021 23:38

Honor and Margot are my favourites (I'm assuming like Margot Robbie?).

LozMarieFielder · 27/12/2021 23:31

Ottilie - really pretty but makes me think of otters
Margot - cool and classy
Hazel - sometimes like it, sometimes don’t (certainly fits my style of names though)
Daphne - love love love!
Esme - lovely
Willa - much prefer Willow
Clara - beautiful name
Honour - meh, doesn’t sound like a name to me
Iris - gorgeous
Mabel - my favourite name of all time

Overall your list is really nice and very much my taste

Mumofgirls2017 · 27/12/2021 23:15

Ottilie- blah, trendy will date
Margot- getting popular; sure nice name not to my taste

Daphne- pretty but too entwined with a pony doo with me
Esme- really gorgeous and sophisticated
Willa- not quite for me but a cool name
Clara- gorgeous and don’t know many
Honor- similar vibes to Hazel of a sensible girl in glasses reading a book
Iris- my favourite! really pretty and cool girl vibes
Mabel- sweet for a child then works for an adult too

Bushkin · 27/12/2021 22:02

Ottilie - love

Daphne - no for me
Esme - like but popular
