What do you think of the name Thora?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LyraVega · 26/12/2021 18:49

I like it, I've genuinely never heard of it before in my life so had no idea so many people thought of it as an old lady name.

Bananalanacake · 26/12/2021 18:46

I know 2 girls called Thora but it's pronounced Toura in Germany.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/12/2021 18:24

Flora or Cora

Are much nicer

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 26/12/2021 18:20

I love it! And I am not a fan of ‘old’ names.

Kids aren’t going to know who Thora Hird is. And so what if they did?

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 26/12/2021 18:04

@SeanChailleach

Idk but Tora seems to be the modern Scandi version - based on Nordicnames.de perhaps someone could confirm.
Yep, although not a modern name, Tora is an old Norsk name, Tor and Tore being the male equivalents. It’s starting to gain a little more popularity here now, as is Tor for boys.
JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 26/12/2021 18:01

I have a Tora! It’s a Norwegian name and she is most definately my goddess of Thunder! We don’t use the H over here though, in Norwegian it is Tor (masculine), not Thor.
I’ve had nothing but positive comments about her name from my English family (although i suppose they wouldn’t be negative to my face).

HandScreen · 26/12/2021 17:55

Beautiful name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/12/2021 17:44

Love it!

Long due a revival.

tiredanddangerous · 26/12/2021 17:22

If you lived in my town she'd be called Fora. Th doesn't seem to exist round these parts.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2021 17:19

@soundsystem

I love it! Unusual but easy for people to spell and pronounce. Do it!
But it's not easy for everyone (in particular small children, but also some adults) to pronounce correctly.

It's gorgeous OP. Do it!

piratehugs · 26/12/2021 17:08

DS would have been a Thora if he'd been a DD. It's a brilliant name.

scottishnames · 26/12/2021 17:06

It's fine; not my favourite but if you like it, why not? As others have said, Thora Hird was a very accomplished actor.

'Thora' was also a very, very popular Edwardian parlour ballad. There are various performaces on Youtube. It's mentioned in the book of Nancy Mitford's 'Love in a Cold Climate'.

I also rather like Vera and Thelma, which are quite similar, partly because I knew two smashing, kind and clever older women with those names. They are simple, straightforward and dignified - a quality that's often overlooked when it comes to names.

Kite22 · 26/12/2021 16:12

I mean I think 'Hird' , but I actually quite like it.

It fits with all the other 'old fashioned' names that have been popular over the last 5 years or so.
Quite a 'strong' sounding name. Easy to spell. Easy to say if you see it written down.

Scirocco · 26/12/2021 15:54

I like it. It's nicer than quite a few of the older names making a comeback at the moment. I think most kids would make a connection with the MCU rather than with Thora Hird or rhyming slang these days.

Thorax.

theitgirll · 26/12/2021 15:04

I love it. Strong but soft, easy to spell. Gorgeous and due a revival IMO. I

Chunkymenrock · 26/12/2021 15:04

Shockingly awful name.

Littlebelina · 26/12/2021 14:57

I like it (old enough to remember thora hird but don't immediately link it to her). Thora Birch came to mind quicker. I think it's cute, heard much worse.

emmathedilemma · 26/12/2021 14:53

I think it could grow on me! So long as you live somewhere that pronounces Th sound properly and not as an F! I’ve never heard the turd slang.

thewhatsit · 26/12/2021 14:51

I like it.

Reminds me of Thora Birch - what happened to her?

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2021 14:33

That is one startlingly ugly name.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2021 14:31

I spent quite a while one year looking for the DVD of a film my DD wanted to see called 'Four'. Fortunately at some point she mentioned it being a Marvel character and the penny dropped.

So I wouldn't.Grin
