I really like it, go for it!

Blackberrybunnet · 28/12/2021 11:57

Love it!

TyrannosaurusRights · 27/12/2021 23:25

Love it. I do think of Hird, but it’s not a bad association. Please do use it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/12/2021 22:48

It makes me think of The Pursuit of Love:

This winter Uncle Matthew had a new tune on his gramophone, called 'Thora'. 'I live in a land of roses,' boomed a deep male voice, 'but dream of a land of snow. Speak, speak, SPEAK to me, Thora'. He played it morning, noon, and night; it suited our mood exactly, and Thora seemed the most poignantly beautiful of names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/12/2021 22:32

Also like Flora too (again it's the literary associations that sell it to me), but the "spreadable" thing might put me off it a bit. The more I think about it the better Thora sounds - its stands out in a good way imo.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/12/2021 22:27

Much prefer Scandi style Thora to soundalikes Dora and Nora (as they feel a bit dowdy to me) - but personally like Laura and Cora better still (probably due to their literary associations).

I do tend to think of an elderly Thora Hird before "cooler" Thora Birch, but that shouldn't be an issue for your DD's generation or even many of their parents.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 27/12/2021 22:06

I really like Thora and also Tora, which has that cool Scandi vibe.

Foxglovers · 27/12/2021 20:52

I absolutely love it! I think of thora birch and was on my list!

MoominMeggy · 27/12/2021 20:50

I also really like Nora / Norah and Dora - but not Flora or Cora.

I think it's a lovely name, but my daughter is named Nora and that also seems to be unpopular on MN!

wizzler · 27/12/2021 20:10

Really like it. Also Nora and Dora

MoominMeggy · 27/12/2021 19:25

Wow, I really seem to have stumbled upon a marmite name Grin

Awful.

AnyaMoondial · 27/12/2021 18:32

Really like it.

EdgeOfACoin · 27/12/2021 16:45

I really like Thora. It's stronger than Flora and nicer than some vintage names like Mabel or Edith (imo).

I knew a Scandinavian Thora in her 20s once - she was tall, blonde and slender and the name suited her.

Young kids are not going to make a connection with Thora Hird.

WhoppingBigBackside · 27/12/2021 16:43

Thora Hird was lovely. She died about 19 years ago so youngsters won't know of her

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 27/12/2021 15:54

I think you do have to think about the pronunciation thing with any 'th' name.

For example my cockney friend has a daughter named 'Marfaaaa' and as we live in very rural north of Scotland it's very noticeable!

Tigger85 · 27/12/2021 12:11

I like it, I have no idea who Thora Hird is, the only Thora I can think of is Thora Birch.

MintMatchmaker · 27/12/2021 11:37

It’s dreadful. I am familiar with the turd slang though so maybe that’s why I don’t like it.

Iamanicepersonreally · 27/12/2021 11:23

I really dislike it. It's marginally better than Nora though

liverpoolgal82 · 27/12/2021 11:21

I like it. Once you use it and it becomes her name it'll be pretty and strong.

DPotter · 27/12/2021 03:07

Nay, Nay and thrice Nay

KloppsTeeth · 27/12/2021 03:01

Love it, a strong name and I like the meaning.

FlamingoDust · 26/12/2021 20:19

I really like it!

PanicBuyingSprouts · 26/12/2021 18:49

I really, really like it. I think if you're going to use it you need to love it though, well, if the reaction on here is anything to go by!
