What do you all think of Eve? Has it been overdone due to the popularity of Evie?

Eva, Evie and Evelyn I think are all in the top 50. Along with Ava and Ivy, the names start to blend in a lot. I do think Eve is a nice name but it’s just become a bit bland for me now. At least some of the popular names stand out a bit on their own even if they are very common. I would personally choose something a bit more unusual. Lots of nice short name for girls that are not quite as popular x

MsTSwift · 24/12/2021 08:42

How?! Felt like there had been passed a law that every girl must be named Eve / Evie or Eva. Soooo many of them. Dds friends at one point were Eve G Eve W and Eve C. Definitely one to avoid. So many lovely names why does everyone choose the same ones?!

Roselilly36 · 23/12/2021 16:10

I love Eve, only known one child called Eve, but lots of Evie’s, great choice OP

MsTSwift · 23/12/2021 15:46

God don’t do it! It’s like calling a girl Sarah or Claire in the 70s. At one point a third of the girls in dd1 class were named a variant of Eve. Super dull.

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2021 12:12

It's lovely, so simple and elegant.

LuckyMum3 · 21/12/2021 11:33

It's a beautiful name and one I've considered but my 3 dds have longer names so doesn't look right.
Prefer it to Evie! Very pretty.

FayCarew · 21/12/2021 08:05

Eve isn't underused, it is quite popular, just not as overused as Evie, Eva, Ava, Evelyn and Ivy

Eve is classic and lovely, but the overall trend will date it as soon as stronger sounding names become popular

Edenember · 21/12/2021 03:02

@IamnotwhouthinkIam I can never understand it either, to me it’s the original and best… but also I’m not complaining because I like that it’s not so popular.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/12/2021 02:44

@Edenember - yes, I can never work out why Eve is underused when Evie, Eva, Evelyn aren't. Most people seem to have got past the Biblical story (especially now it has been given a more feminist perspective) so I can only think it's that Eve doesn't fit the current trends for "a" or "ie" ending, retro/vintage, or elaborate girls names - it's understated as you say.

PurBal · 21/12/2021 02:44

I prefer Eve to Evie. Evie is a diminutive which I don’t like for given names.

Queeen · 21/12/2021 02:39

I really don't like it.

I love Evangeline though.

All the other v names like Evie, Ava, Ivy, etc, no. Boring and overdone.

Edenember · 21/12/2021 02:17

@IamnotwhouthinkIam agreed. It’s gorgeous and understated.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/12/2021 02:05

Stunning - far more timeless feeling than Evie, Evelyn or Evelina, Evangeline etc but statistically always much less popular/overused than equally classic Eva. If I wanted to go for one of the Ev- girls names, it would be the one I'd pick.

Imo Eve has an elegant look and sound, yet still has a kind of cool modern feel thanks to the fact it's a short, simple palindrome (which when combined with it's meaning, therefore tends to get used sometimes in Sci-fi/fantasy books and films).

Billyliarohdear · 20/12/2021 20:24

@WhoppingBigBackside

There are so many similar names that it merges into them. Evie, Eva, Ava, Ivy, Niamh (mispronounced as Neev), Evelyn. Aoife etc

I don't like the others but I do like Eve.

Same.
Fetchthevet · 20/12/2021 20:23

Love it.

BellsaRinging · 20/12/2021 20:23

I love it!

Buddhabowl · 20/12/2021 20:22

Im sorry I think I disagree with most on this thread. I don't see it as classic, I don't know any my age or older and I don't think it will stand the test of time. It is way too associated with the name Evie now and Eva and Ava, they all merge into one and have become very dull.and as a result they will fall out of fashion and sound dated.
There are so many beautiful classic names that are more substantial and that sound a lot more fresh than Eve.

CrispAndFrosty · 20/12/2021 20:17

@inappropriateraspberry

It's lovely, but if they're born around Christmas everyone will presume their birthday is the 24th!
Have to say, this would never occur to me.

Eve is beautiful and I'm sure some of today's Evies will wish they had it as their proper name. I've never understood why Evie is so popular as a given name when Eve is shorter and lends itself easily to Evie anyway. (Same thoughts on Gracie and Grace).

Eve has a deep, still presence of its own, even amidst a crowd of Evies, Avas etc.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/12/2021 18:13

It’s lovely but there are 60 million Eve, Evie, Eva, Evelyn, Avas, and I now see Evelina popping up.

So I would try and find something else if you possibly can..

Soubriquet · 20/12/2021 18:06

My dh didn’t like it because he sees it as a religious name and he isn’t religious but there we go

Edenember · 20/12/2021 16:01

@Soubriquet I’ve been in exactly the same position. Was devastated, I didn’t realise anyone could have such a strong aversion to such an inoffensive name, it was the one name I had my heart set on.

Soubriquet · 20/12/2021 15:39

I love Eve. It was one name I really wanted for DD but dh didn’t like it and put his foot down

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 20/12/2021 15:34

I like it a lot, but prefer Eva.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 20/12/2021 15:13

My DD2 has a variation of this name (a very uncommon one in England) which I obviously love. I prefer Eva to Eve but I like both.

inappropriateraspberry · 20/12/2021 15:12

It's lovely, but if they're born around Christmas everyone will presume their birthday is the 24th!
