You are correct that 'firth' is Norse in origin. Sorry, I was not thinking straight - I was just trying to say that there is not a 'Scottish' language, or a - generally recognised - girls name 'Firtha'..

In the west, Gaelic 'linne' is used for sea inlet, not loch. (Loch Linnhe for example, and An Linne Latharnach (Firth of Lorne).) And the element 'linn' is also used for other types of water.
Firth is often used in conjunction with Gaelic-origin words to form phrases: Moray Firth etc etc.

Firth means estuary in Gaelic, not "Scottish"

I don't think there is a Gaelic word like "firth", which is from Old Norse fiörthr.
There are places called Aber, which is a British Celtic word. (Ég Aberdeen, Aberystwyth).
In Ireland and west of Scotland I think the word is loch.

OP If it matters, the Greek /Latin god or Titan Okeanos/Oceanus, from whom we get the name Ocean, was very, very definitely male.

Almost anything beginning Mar- / Mary derivatives. Of which Marietta is my favourite. Also like Marlena.

Please, please not the Latin 'Salacia' as mentioned upthread. Just remember what 'salacious' means today (ie 'salty' an old 'polite' term for very indecent).

Firth means estuary in Gaelic, not "Scottish" (there's no such language; there is Scots, but that's very different from Gaelic. It's closer to old-fashioned NE English, but has changed over the centuries with mixtures of words from Scandinavia and the Netherlands.) And I don't know that anyone in real life has ever been called "Firtha"; Firth is perfectly well-known surname, however.

You really, really cannot believe what you read on most babyname websites, or on romaticised TV programmes.

Itxaso means sea in Basque (pronounced I-ch-a-so). It's quite common there, would obviously be quite unusual in the UK!

Stella Maris means Star of the Sea. It’s an old medieval name for the Virgin Mary, and also for the North Star which helped sailors to navigate.
