Expecting a second baby boy next year. Interested in views on Walter, which I think I love but someone today told me it was “posh” sounding.

What do you think? Previously liked Wilfred but so many of those about now…

OP posts:

Wattie is another common nickname for Walter, I'm sure it'd due a comeback

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:55

Walter Matthau! How could I have forgotten him. The Odd Couple is a hysterically funny film.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:54

Becker. Apols.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:54

Walt Disney didn't do too badly for himself, after all.

Walt Whitman, Walter Raleigh ...

Hadn't realised Walter Becked was dead (actually, I probably had, but had forgotten). RIP, Walter, and thanks for the music. First CD we ever bought in the 80s was a Steely Dan compilation. Wonderful stuff.

Classica · 14/12/2021 18:53

It reminds me of American Walters like Walt Whitman or Walter Matthau and they're not bad namesakes to have.

Not my style of name but I could imagine growing to like it.

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 18:52

Ahh I try not to comment on baby names but Walter is awful.
It's Walt or Wally.

There are classic names that age well ( as in suit any age) like William or Edward but Walter is up there with Gary for me. Sorry OP.

inmyslippers · 14/12/2021 18:50

I love it. I think Walt from breaking bad

TuftyMarmoset · 14/12/2021 18:50

Walther von der Vogelweide is pronounced Val-ter btw - stronger name than the English version and not sure the English sound is enough to bring that connotation or if you’d just get Disney etc.

TuftyMarmoset · 14/12/2021 18:47

Well I like Walther von der Vogelweide (famous German poet) but I would be concerned about the shortening to Wally as well

Roselilly36 · 14/12/2021 18:41

Don’t call your beautiful baby boy Walter, it’s just awful. I am usually positive when it comes to name choices, but I draw the line at Walter. Nicknames would be Wally or Walt, no just no.

Lulu1919 · 14/12/2021 18:41

I know a Walter he gets Walt at school

Joolsin · 14/12/2021 18:38

No, it's too wet

Livefortherain · 14/12/2021 18:37

I know a "Woulter", I like it.

SirChenjins · 14/12/2021 18:36

I’m trying to imagine 14 year old DS or any of his friends being called Walter Grin It’s got an old man vibe and not in a good way - it’s a Cyril/Dennis type name that’s fallen out of favour for good reason.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

I realise now, overthinking about this, I'm also thinking of Walter Presents on Channel 4. The only series we've watched in that strand is Deutschland 83/86/89, but that was brilliant, so positive associations from that, and also from my poor benighted violin teacher, who was also a German Walter, and Steely Dan's Walter Becker, who doesn't look as cool as he sounds, alas.

Walter Becker was a brilliant mind and supremely talented and I liked that he was unassuming. That's very cool 😎 in my books.

ManchesterTartwithCustard · 14/12/2021 18:33

Not keen. My Grandfather was named Wallace. I prefer that

Iamanicepersonreally · 14/12/2021 18:31

I’m not overly keen, but I don’t hate it.

Jasharps · 14/12/2021 18:31

Love it

MintyCedric · 14/12/2021 18:31

I know three lovely cats called Walter/Wally...don't think I'd use it for a child tbh.

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2021 18:30

It's ok

Walt is better than Wally

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/12/2021 18:30

I'm generally supportive of these old names and I love Stanley, for example. But Walter makes me think of the Beano character and now Jacob Rees-Mogg.

CampagVelocet · 14/12/2021 18:25

I love it!

HuntingoftheSnark · 14/12/2021 18:14

My father was Walter, but he was German and it had a stronger sound as in VAL- ter, although he was naturalised British. He was definitely never called Wally!
