Libatius for a Boy

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2021 09:21

Pronounced Lye-Bay-Shus.

Came across the character Libatius Borage while re-reading Harry Potter and thought Libatius is actually a lovely name. Wondering what MN thought of it? I had a look on darkgreener and it isn’t in any use. Bit out there? Or a charming name that deserves more attention?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Rakoffscott · 12/12/2021 16:12

Are you Jacob Rees Mogg?

stalkersaga · 12/12/2021 16:07

Tbh, yeah, if you already have a pretentious-sounding double-barrelled surname, the best way to not sound like a red-trousered Establishment wanker is to give him as sturdy, classic and short a name as possible. James, Thomas, all the classics.

repottingthescabious · 12/12/2021 16:00

Constantine is dreadful.

Pick something classic like James or Matthew.

Much nicer for the child to bear especially if he is already lumbered with a double barrelled surname..

repottingthescabious · 12/12/2021 15:57

@MrsColon

Honestly? Sounds like one of Jacob Rees-Mogg's kids.
^this

please don't be so pretentious. Your child will be picked on for life.

Don't worry! To quash any fears Mumsnetters have I can confirm this name was rapidly vetoed by DH, so not even a distant possibility. Like I said in a previous post I just like the sound of it and was curious to see what others thought.

You're missing the point. People aren't scoffing at an 'out-there name' or even a new name - the thing is that it's a joke name - like in Monty Python where the wife is Incontinentia.

All this thread shows is that you don't know what the word libation/libatius means.

JaneJeffer · 12/12/2021 15:48

Contanstine is so lovely and DH is on board with it.
Don't give him a name you can't spell.

Newduvet · 12/12/2021 15:48

Sounds like something that grows on your foot from a dirty swimming pool changing room.

OakPine · 12/12/2021 15:48

Why don't you change YOUR name to that ridiculous name if it makes you happy?
Give your child a normal name for fucks sake - I despair.
Poor child!

Musmerian · 12/12/2021 15:42

Constantine is great and you can shorten it to Con. Libatius is bonkers.

Yourforever · 12/12/2021 15:42

I like it. I think it's a better middle name though.

SeasonFinale · 12/12/2021 15:39

Libatius - sounds like he has a nasty case of libatius

Chachasha · 12/12/2021 15:34

No.

It sounds too like libelous

NynaeveSedai · 12/12/2021 15:33

Sounds like libellous or libation
Neither of which are nice meanings

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 12/12/2021 15:31

What about Labia for a girl? 😍

Only joking, it's awful

SalsaLove · 12/12/2021 15:30

Libatious Rees-Mogg

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2021 15:29

@Holly60 thanks! Contanstine is so lovely and DH is on board with it. However, we have a longish double barrel surname which invites "oh you must be posh", I am hyper-concious of any name that could be considered pretentious because the surname is already there. While I don't care about these assumptions, I'm making a choice for a child who would have to deal with this, not just myself. It's something we really have to mull over.

Oh no, please don't!

Like I said in a previous post I just like the sound of it and was curious to see what others thought. I didn't expect the majority to fawn over it, but it has been more overwhelmingly negative than I predicted. I guess all name use has to start somewhere - wasn't the name Wendy made up by the author of Peter Pan? Arlo has no baby name use in the UK until 1999 and now it is rank 27! Perhaps Libatius isn't the next trend though.

Don't forget that many of JKR's names are puns & in jokes!

What about Cornelius, a similar vibe, but an actual usable name?

PinkSyCo · 12/12/2021 15:17

Also, the fact that DH would never agree!

Thank the lord for your husband because I fear you OP must be quite mad! Lifuckingbatius 🤣🤣

Holly60 · 12/12/2021 15:13

I actually quite like Constantine. Are you sure you can’t make that work?

startled · 12/12/2021 15:12

Poor kid

AuntieStella · 12/12/2021 15:07

Definitely has the ring of alcohol!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/12/2021 15:03

Sorry but It Sounds like something they’d call the next variant of Covid (We’ve no doubt got to look forward to)

ZenNudist · 12/12/2021 10:32

Not an actual name. Asking for them to change it or use a middle name at first chance they get.

CherryAndAlmond · 12/12/2021 10:30

Oh no, please don't!
