Baby girls you know??

Hello all 🙂 I’m expecting a girl imminently and am having a wobble over her name. I really love a very common girl’s name (top 10) but I don’t actually know any babies or toddlers with it. I’m just wondering if people could name the baby and toddler girls that you know or that are in your children’s nurseries? I feel like all the babies I know are Isla/Ava/Mya type- names, but I’m yet to hear the one I want to use.

Very torn as I’ve always loved the name, but also have never wanted a common name for my child (I was one of 3 Sophies in my tutor group and it was quite confusing/annoying!!)

Thanks so much for any help x

Lily is so beautiful - one of my favourites
I know of one locally and one via a friend of a friend. Not many at all.

If you look at the graph of the official statistics of the name Lily, it's been falling in numbers for years- consistently since it's peak in 2011 in fact - the numbers speak for themselves look at the graph of official ONS figures. You might pick a name further down the charts only for it to overtake Lily in a couple of years. Stick with Lily

I know 3 baby Lily’s. It’s popular because it’s a lovely name even if not my cup of tea.

Names of girls at nursery: Violet-Rose, Alisa, Aurora, Jasmine, Daisy, Caroline, Iris, Isabella, Margot, Lucy, Isla, Ava, Amelia, Emilia, Rose, Darcy

I have an Eden, we love it and not terribly common 😊

PlainJane1000 · 01/12/2021 20:18

There is a 7 month old Lilly in our baby class, along with Sophie, Isla, Callie, Cara, Freya, Elsie.
My son has a name outside of the top 30 and there is another boy with the same name in the class.

I work jn a school and we currently only have 2 Lily's in Year 8. None in Nursery to Year 7.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 01/12/2021 19:15

I don’t know any baby or toddlers called Lily, I know lots who are between 9-13 though!

liveforsummer · 01/12/2021 18:39

I know plenty Lily's but they are all a bit older. I work in the lower end of a school and know most of the dc in the nursery too so 290 odd dc and there was one Lily but she has left so we have none.

ThirdElephant · 01/12/2021 18:06

@SummerLew

Lily is a classic so it doesn't matter how popular it is. It's so much more solid than the Luna, Lyra, Lila type names that are everywhere at the moment.
Well, it does matter if you specifically don't want a popular name.

Lily is really popular, I work with kids and we see loads of them, sorry! We also have a baby Lily in the family.

It’s a pretty name but I get bored of it being paired with Rose/May/Grace which are the filler middle names for girls currently. So it would be less common to pair Lily with something else for a change.

WakeUpLockie · 01/12/2021 11:58

Oh yeah, Lily is popular, no getting away from it. Gorgeous though!

Both my kids have top 10 names, and neither has ever had another with the same name in nursery / school class / Brownies / Cubs etc. There are two boys with the same name as my son in the school, but different years, and one with the same name as my daughter, again in a different year.

Quite a few people have said "that's my cousin's child's name" or "that's my next-door neighbours' grandchild's name" so if I made a list of all the children we have heard of with the same name, it would be a long list. But we have never met most of these other children and probably never will.

OverTheWater · 01/12/2021 11:22

I have a 3yo and a tiny, we don't know any Lily's at all!

In every group we go to there are two or more of the Evie/Ellie/Emily category and some frilly ones ottilie, Alicia, isabella

Nature names generally are big e.g. Jasmine, Rose, Hazel, Heather. Just not actually Lily!

We also know a few Florence's so if lily is your first preference I wouldn't go for Florence just to have a less common name. Flo . . . hard to abbreviate nicely too.

LittleGwyneth · 01/12/2021 11:10

Lily is an absolutely lovely name and I really don't think you should let it put you off.

Skeumorph · 01/12/2021 11:00

Sorry Lily is probably the most common of all within all the under 18 age groups I know!! I probably know about 8 of them, all hailing from school links (classmates/siblings of)

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 01/12/2021 07:56

I don't know any Lilys younger than about 8 years old.

Hattiehoops · 30/11/2021 22:52

Yes I’ve noticed flower names trending too despite the fact they’re further down the charts. The back-up name I’m contemplating is Florence (great aunt) , again I’ve not come across many but it’s currently sitting at number 14! I guess it’s very hard to predict name trends and I agree with everyone saying it’s quite a regional thing too. I’m going to try not to overthink it!

Such a beautiful name - go for it!

AliceMck · 30/11/2021 22:41

Lilly is a pretty name, if it’s important to you use it. All my children have names that mean something to me.

I know a few Lilly’s but they are all older, primary school age. I’ve not heard of any in my youngest preschool.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 30/11/2021 22:30

My DD is nearly 4 and her friends are
Mabel
Hattie
Lottie
Harper
Ruby
Kennedy (ergh!)

LibbyL92 · 30/11/2021 22:26

I work in a primary school of 600 children.
I’ve been there 15 years and can only re call one Lily.
