Baby girls you know??

Hello all 🙂 I’m expecting a girl imminently and am having a wobble over her name. I really love a very common girl’s name (top 10) but I don’t actually know any babies or toddlers with it. I’m just wondering if people could name the baby and toddler girls that you know or that are in your children’s nurseries? I feel like all the babies I know are Isla/Ava/Mya type- names, but I’m yet to hear the one I want to use.

Very torn as I’ve always loved the name, but also have never wanted a common name for my child (I was one of 3 Sophies in my tutor group and it was quite confusing/annoying!!)

Thanks so much for any help x

*I don't know any!!!

cafedesreves · 10/12/2021 23:50

All the baby girls I know have super super unusual names. No top 10 at all! Use Lily if you love it, I don't know why!

My GD's name was not even in the top 100 but in her swimming class and the next one up there were three with the same name.

KateInHappyland · 09/12/2021 15:51

Update to my previous post, I now know of an Erin, one week old today.

Lily was also my great-grandmother's name ,@Hattiehoops - as others have said, it's a classic name for a reason.

I also know three other Lily's, though, outside of the family. One is 16 and my son's girlfriend, the second is 7 and a friend's daughter and the other is 3 and my daughter's goddaughter. When my son (17) was born, one of the other babies born that night was Lillie - I remember one of the midwives commenting on how she'd have an easier time of learning to write her name "because it's all straight lines".

Other small girls I know are Fleur, Florrie (short for Florence), Rosie, Lexi-Mai, Eloise, Francesca (x2), Ivy, Poppy, Caitlin, Ruby, Elise, Harper, Mia, Eliana (Eli for short), Anna (x2), Ella, Kristina, Millie-Bea, Sia-Rose, Abby (x2), Chloe (x2), Emily, Sophia (x2) and Lola.

Ivy is the sister of the 3 year old Lily, whilst Poppy is sister to the 7 year old.

Weirdly the two Abby and Chloes... are sisters (ie, friend A has Abby & Chloe, as does friend B). It can be confusing at times.

Worked in childcare for many years and I've only ever met 2 baby lily's and one Liliana who went by lili. I think it's a lovely classic name

finallychangedmyusername · 08/12/2021 22:51

I feel like Lily was more popular maybe 5-10 years back and two syllable girl names feel popular. I know a Leia, Lyra, Lucy, Lacey, Lexi, Layla, Letty, Lyla and Lilly all aged 8 and under. Interestingly I don't think I know any little Lilys!

Freddie456 · 08/12/2021 20:54

I know two Lilys under 2. Lovely name though.

Pineapples9087 · 08/12/2021 20:16

Names of mine and my friends dds (aged between 6 weeks and 5 years)

Callie, Darcie, Ella, Alyssa, Ruby, Chloe, Sofia, Elise, Lily, Eliza, Georgia.

puffaluff · 06/12/2021 18:14

I don't know any Lilys, but there are lots of Florences in dd's school. Lily seemed popular in young girls around 10 years ago when I worked in family law.

BingBongToTheMoon · 06/12/2021 12:53

I know 2 Lilies both born in the last 6 weeks…..one Lily one Lilly.

cadburyegg · 06/12/2021 12:45

Other names I can think of from preschool and toddler groups etc

Amelia
Willow
Lyra
Robyn
Eliza
Betsy
Connie
Tessa
Lizzie
Matilda

cadburyegg · 06/12/2021 12:42

There is a Lily in the toddler group I help run 😊

yellowflowersintherain · 06/12/2021 12:40

Popularity varies a lot in different areas. If you look on the ONS website you can see names registered last year by area, it's fascinating.

To answer your question, I've got two girls under six and I'm racking my brains but I don't think we've come across a single Lily in any baby group, nursery or school class!

Names I hear more regularly are:

Aria
Margot
Florence
Evie
Grace
Sienna
Emily
Annabel
Sophie/Sophia

But I'm not talking loads of girls with those names, maybe only 2-3. I think the days of a single school class with 4 Sarah's, 3 Katie's, 2 Emma's etc are gone now.

JammyRedRooo · 06/12/2021 12:31

Lola
Ava
Sienna x2
Mila
Ivy
Alannah
Olivia
Amelia

Fivebeanchilli · 05/12/2021 23:29

I meet a very large number of babies due to my work. I've not come across a Lily for several years. Where I am the most popular girls' names in the last couple of years have been Penelope, Margot and Ava/Eva/Evelyn (which have been popular for a long time now).

Rrrob · 05/12/2021 22:49

I know a 1 year old Lily. Others from our nct group are Sophie, Ava, Ella, Beatrice, Sienna.

Nellesbelles · 05/12/2021 22:41

I wouldn't worry about popularity. I chose a name for my DD which wasn't even in the top 100 and we have still ended up knowing 3 more babies with the same name born within a month of each other!! 🙄🙈 I don't regret it as I also chose her name for sentimental reasons. Lily is a beautiful name. Good luck with your baby girl!

AncienneEtudiante · 04/12/2021 22:00

There was a phase a while ago where there were a lot of hyphenated names with Lily; Lily-May, Lily-Rose etc. So it may be more popular than it looks iyswim if you count all the hyphenated ones too.

I actually don't think I know any baby Lilys though! The only Lily I actually know well is 37.

KateInHappyland · 04/12/2021 21:20

The only girls I know around that age are Erica (3) and Bella (7 months, not short for anything - just Bella).

Also, re: your great grandmother Lily, Lily is my middle name and the only one I know was my grandmother's sister! It's a classic for a reason. I'd say use it. Smile
