Middle name for Ada?

DH and I are pretty set that we'll be calling DD1 Ada, but we can't agree on middle names at all. I love Elizabeth, but he's not keen. He's suggested Felicity and Florence, neither of which I'm wild about (nice names, but bad associations from school!). The only middle name we've agreed on so far is Sophia, but it would be nice to have a few more options! Any suggestions? We want something fairly traditional and reasonably long to balance out the shortness of the first name.

I think have a proper name so if she doesn’t like Ada she can use another name. I think Spanish or French names sound quite nice next to it.

Think you want something quite soft sounding for contrast, but elegant like Ada. Avoid single syllable which has become such a screaming cliche.

Byron's daughter (later = Ada Lovelace, the computer pioneer) was Ada Augusta. Rather elegant, I think.

Before I even clicked on this post, I thought Florence by just seeing the title!

DH persuaded me not to use my middle name of choice for DD2 as said there were too many consonants. This led to huge hormonal weeping from me in car park when registering her birth. Ended up with 2 middle names and the consonants issue never mentioned again. This is one of these issues you genuinely think is important before you have them and you then never give it another thought over the years. That said DD2 hates the original middle name and wants to change it by deed poll as soon as she hits 18. And wants to give a future daughter the consonant filled middle name!!!

mangosparkle · 29/11/2021 17:18

Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone! Out of the ones that have been suggested, I like Eleanor and Margot. Still hoping DH will relent on Elizabeth! We're trying to avoid one syllable names, so anything short is out unfortunately. Surname is two syllables, so I think maybe something with three syllables would be good?

I'd suggest you choose a middle name that doesn't start with a vowel as two adjacent vowels can make a harsh sound.

I think syllable count matters too, in making the whole nam,e mellifluous but not a gagging mouthful.
Are you going to address her by both her forenames like

"Ada middlename " ? Or will she mostly be using "Ada Surname".

So, how many syllables in your surname?

Ada Lily
Ada Belle
Ada Wren

Ada Sophie would be better than Ada Sophia. It’s too A heavy.
