Some of them are awful and some of them gorgeous and underused.

I love Faith, Joy, Honor, Mercy (which I saw posted about on here recently - which went down very badly) and Hope.

What's your favorite virtue name? (Of all of them, not just the ones I like!)

Assuming you like any, of course Grin

@Flutterflybutterby Grin
That’s made me laugh
Must use my specs more Grin

ThirdElephant · 28/11/2021 06:36

@Kanaloa

What did they actually call these children though? Surely no parent was saying ‘if-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned! Go and tell flee-fornication that dinner’s ready.’

They must have called them something shorter as a nickname!

Iffy?

Also: Praise-God Barebone. The Barebones were a rich source of crazy names. This one was a leather-worker, member of a particularly odd Puritan group and an MP. If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned Fear-God.
I'm surprised we don't hear 'If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned' more often, actually. Gorgeous name. Grin

@BlueFlavour

But fly fornication? What’s that?
It's Flee-Fornication Grin

An actual, used, puritan name.

Can you imagine shouting "Flee Fornication! Home time!!" across the playground? Grin

Precious

@BlueFlavour

But fly fornication? What’s that?
I presume it meant 'flee from filthy fornication!'

I can’t understand why Cher called her daughter Chastity. That would be enough to screw anyone’s life up.
If you were calledTemperance then you’d be forever the subject of jokes if you had a alcoholic drink.
I think one needs to think very hard before using a virtue name . For instance Iwould be subject toridiculehadI been named Grace or Patience. Verity is pretty but then it’s not a word commonly used now.

beastlyslumber · 27/11/2021 22:30

@CelebrateAndDream

I had three Aunts (no longer with us) called Faith, Hope and Charity 🥰
What is/was your parent's name?
QuiltedHippo · 27/11/2021 22:30

I just adore Joy

ghislaine · 27/11/2021 22:22

I love virtue names! Top of my list are Honor and Patience. Sadly no DDs for me.

I went to school with a girl called Peace, which I thought was fabulous.

@LuluBlakey1
Those names really give a sense of the times people lived in.

ThirdElephant · 27/11/2021 22:15

Does Evangeline count? Met an adorable little girl called Evangeline once. Suited her.

WhatHoMarjorie · 27/11/2021 22:11

*not a fan of

WhatHoMarjorie · 27/11/2021 22:10

Temperance and Chastity would be absolute millstone names.

I'm not a fab of virtue names really. Prudence is very ugly. I suppose Joy is okay because it's not about disavowing something that might bring you pleasure.

KrispyKale · 27/11/2021 20:59

I think I actually like some if these. (Not Be-Kind! Another one of those burdensome names.)

KrispyKale · 27/11/2021 20:53

Be-Kind
