How do you feel when you see your child’s name mentioned?

Just curious how you feel when you see your child’s name being discussed and the general consensus is a “hell no!” Grin

The only time I ever really see my son’s names come up is when there is a “Is this a naughty boy’s name?” thread. Grin

Incidentally, both my boys are very well behaved Grin

I’ve also just seen my name being discussed as a potential for a girl and let’s say the feedback wasn’t the most flattering Grin

The whole thing does make me smile Grin

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
RobinPenguins · 26/11/2021 13:54

I don’t really care. Both mine and DD’s names are ones that most MNetters seem to like but a few violently dislike so 🤷🏻‍♀️

MilkTooth · 26/11/2021 13:54

DS's name is so unusual the individual numbers weren't reported in the ONS stats for his birth year, which I think means there were three or fewer born. On the rare occasions it's mentioned on here, it's described as a 'brave' choice. Grin

WinterIcelandicPony · 26/11/2021 13:52

DS1 always gets a response of 'it's boring, outdated and will never come back'.

Ds2 gets 'Top 10 boring. 75 million in every class. '

I adore DS1s first name. DS2 I am a bit saddened it is so popular- but it is popular for a reason I think. People like it.

FlickerBeat · 26/11/2021 13:52

DS2 has a name that is hated on MN as being too American and a Surname type name

Hah - so do I. It came up once here, and there was a mostly negative reaction. But I love it - and get nothing but nice comments irl - so sod 'em.

lunar1 · 26/11/2021 13:48

My own name is child cruelty according to MN, I agree 🤦🏻‍♀️

DS1 is so common, DS2 is trying to hard with a unique spelling and he'll never amount to anything serious. We can just ignore the fact that my children are mixed race and it's a thousands of years old name, I didn't just try to make up a trendy spelling!

TatianaBis · 26/11/2021 13:42

Posters would say that my kids' names are too out there, posh, flowery, pretentious, will get bullied etc. In real life people say they're beautiful.

purpleme12 · 26/11/2021 13:08

Most of the time when I've seen it here people seem to like it so it's all good
But the other times when they don't I don't care really. I still feel proud of her name a I love it and think it's a brilliant name
(And wish she hadn't chosen to adopt a nickname with her friends which is much less nice!)

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 26/11/2021 13:06

The worst that my DCs' names get called on here is 'boring'. Doesn't bother me, they are classic and everyone can spell/pronounce them without having to be corrected so it that makes them boring, so be it!

TheDuchessOfMN · 26/11/2021 13:03

I regularly see my daughters names mentioned on the “not another x, y, z” threads. Once, a poster even named just those 2, eg ‘Ava and Isla.
It honestly doesn’t bother me at all. They are popular at population level, but we hardly ever come across them in real life. They aren’t sitting at a table with children of the same name, as some threads would lead you to believe.

I’ve seen my ds’s name mentioned on the ‘should make a comeback’ threads. I guess he’s the other extreme

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 12:58

@amsadandconfused

My daughter name was very unique when I had her in the early 90s but it is now in the last few years in the top 50.It is very well received on MN apart from a very occasional discussion about the pronunciation..we use the correct way to say her name. Having said that I actually wouldn't have cared what other people thought and she loves her name!
Ottilie?

I don't care at all, I love the name, he loves the name, and he is the only one of my DC to get regular compliments on having a nice name.

DS1 and DD both have very classic names.

DD1s names is never ever mentioned. It doesn't seem to be on anybody's radar lol. She is one of ten born the year she was born.

DD2's name is only mentioned occasionally, more suggested than commented on, but I've only seen positive comments

Blubells · 26/11/2021 12:38

Honestly the ones that everyone loves on here get boring pretty fast!

Exactly. By definition a name that's universally loved will rise in popularity and become overused. These names often fall out of fashion again and become dated.

Much better to have an underused marmite name - it's probably more memorable and unlikely to date.

My dc's names are definitely marmite - some say they're beautiful underused classics while others describe them as 'posh' or 'poncey' Im not even sure that that's a negative Hmm Anyway we love them!

KirstenBlest · 26/11/2021 12:27

@KarmaViolet, are they Cleo and Bram?

My DC's names usually get classic or boring

Santaischeckinglists · 26/11/2021 11:12

Well one of my dd's is a hooker or a porn star according to mn!!
Don't give a fig.
And as the ultimate act of rebellion I own a toilet brush...
Grin

bluedolfin · 26/11/2021 10:53

DS's name is very rare and came up as a 'name you liked but weren't brave enough to use'. DD's name is a bit more common but has been called ugly/old lady although some like it. I've always preferred more unusual names so I don't expect them to be popular though.

toastofthetown · 26/11/2021 09:59

If Mumsnet had its way then boys would be called one of James, George, Edward, William and Thomas and girls can choose from Alice, Amelia, Elizabeth, Sylvie or Charlotte. It's useful for gauging a bit of a reaction, seeing if there are any cultural/political references with a name but the general Mumsnet opinion does skew conservative with names.

It doesn't bother me though. If I was thin skinned I wouldn't seek out others' thoughts on it. No name will have universal popularity.

DotDotDotDotDot · 26/11/2021 09:20

My daughters name is a bit marmite on Mumsnet, that’s fine though we still love it. I find people can be a bit obsessed with potential nicknames on here, her name has never been shortened so far, it’s only 2 syllables!

ThePoisonousMushroom · 26/11/2021 09:07

My children’s names are always described as ‘horsey’, ‘sloaney’ and ‘jolly hockey sticks’ type names. Makes me laugh, sitting here in my bog standard house in the nondescript midlands. They’re fairly classic names.

CoodleMoodle · 26/11/2021 09:04

For DD, it's a flowery nickname type name. Which it is, but I like it. People aren't too negative but if someone does a list of "girly" names they hate, it's usually on there.

I never really see DS's name come up, but if I do it's either classed as inoffensive or a bit dull. Which I suppose it is, but I like it too!

TheSpiral · 26/11/2021 08:59

My children’s’ names are solid classics, (as is mine) so the only negative thing people have to say about them is that they are meh (from people looking for something non top 20) or sometimes that they are too popular although not often interestingly, even though they are quite popular. These things don’t bother me, they are great names and classic for a reason.
DH’s name, despite being really popular in his generation (so many of my friends married one!) is never ever mentioned on these boards even as a “that name will never come back”! @LoveComesQuickly, I wonder if your DH’s name is the same.

GlobetrottingPercy · 26/11/2021 08:57

When I was pregnant someone actually started a thread about our chosen girls name saying they had picked it and which spelling should they go with and it got absolutely slated - the majority of the comments all said ‘neither, the name is awful’. It didn’t put me off at all though and it is still our chosen name if we were to have a girl in the future.

KarmaViolet · 26/11/2021 08:51

@DaisyWaldron

My children have relatively unusual names, so I did a search for the past 5 years. DD's name was mentioned once, associated with a brand name and an animal. DS's name is apparently simple, unusual, international and possibly gothic, but has too many political associations for many posters.
I can't believe you called your children Tiger and Boris Shock
PurBal · 26/11/2021 08:50

Mine, DH and DS. All get negative feedback. But I’ve openly said I dislike James for my son and there are other names too, but all these names are personal opinion. There’s nothing wrong with James by the way, I’m just not a fan of Jimmy because I knew one who was a dick.
