Thoughts on Florence?

Partner has suggested and although I like it does it seem a bit of a mouthful? I do like the nickname
Flossie, not overly keen on Flo however I don’t mind it.
Middle name would be Alexandra, after my sister who passed away. Our surname is also quite long which makes me think the whole name seems too long.
Any other suggestions welcome. I love Esme but my partner doesn’t. My other daughter is called Isla, so name popularity doesn’t bother me!

Florence is gorgeous name.
Flossie is bad for obvious reasons (floss) and so I flo (menstruation)
I would absolutely still use Florence as the nicknames you mentioned never even crossed my mind before.

Irishfarmer · 29/11/2021 17:15

It's a beautiful name. Doesn't seem like a mouthful to me.

LittleGwyneth · 29/11/2021 16:58

I love Florence but I don't like Flo or Flossie which is the only thing which would put me off using it.

RupertOscar1999 · 26/11/2021 17:42

My daughter is also called Florence and I love it! Florence Alexandra sounds great

I know a 4 year old Florence with the middle name lsla - lovely!“

Yes, that is lovely.

BeKindBeYou · 25/11/2021 22:22

I love Florence! Such a beautiful name!

Champersandchocolate · 25/11/2021 21:18

I have a Florence. I thought I'd call her " Flossie" but it never came out. I always call her Florence. Although she has the personality of a Flo, her nursery teachers started calling her that one day and it made me laugh.

I hated Flo and said she'd never be called that, but she is a little Flo. Although she announces herself as Florence so Flo hasn't stuck.

Mum was adamant that DS would be called this (if he was a girl). Not sure why... I wasn’t adverse to it but we had something else kicked for a girl (and I was pretty sure baby was/is a boy)

DirtyDancing · 25/11/2021 21:01

It's lovely in full... just makes me think of Aunt Flo when shortened!

SirVixofVixHall · 25/11/2021 20:42

I love Florence, the sound of it, the initial (I like F names for some reason) , and the way it can be sweet on a tiny girl but also elegant on an adult woman. Didn’t work with our surname or I might have chosen it .

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/11/2021 20:41

Both pretty. Personally, I think Alexandra Florence flows better.

Imhereforthecake · 25/11/2021 20:39

Love it!

Ohfurflipsake · 25/11/2021 20:33

I love it

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/11/2021 20:27

It's nice enough. I prefer Flora personally.

Spudina · 25/11/2021 19:19

Beautiful name.

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/11/2021 19:18

Florence Alexandra is lovely

Florence looks long but is actually much less if a mouthful than many shorter names which is why I think it works well with Alexandra

MsSquiz · 25/11/2021 18:43

Florence was one of our top 2 for DD1 and is also my grandma's name, it's also in the running for DC2.
We also have Alexandra on the list too as it the female version of my granddad's name, so I love that too.

Full names aren't used very often so I don't think the length of it altogether would be an issue and there would be many shortenings between the 2 names that she could go by

Suzi888 · 25/11/2021 18:42

I’m not a fan. Just brings Florence Nightingale to mind, and I hate Flo.

Mynextname · 25/11/2021 18:40

It's the most common name in my children's school. Each of my children have 2 or 3 of them in their class alone and they all have to have different nicknames or be known by their surname too.

Lostmyway86 · 25/11/2021 18:36

I love it and I have one, youngest DD. I thought we might have a nickname but we've just stuck with Florence as it suits her. Some family and friends call her Florrie though which is cute too and I like.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/11/2021 18:29

Florence is beautiful name imo - if a bit trendy (since it's part of the retro/vintage name trend like Evelyn, Ivy, Ada, Nancy, Mabel etc).

Florence Alexandra sounds lovely and doesn't sound too much to me, even with a long surname, since Florence is only 2 syllables (I also don't think it needs a nn for the same reason, but if so, I much prefer Florrie to Flo/Flossie). .

Moonlaserbearwolf · 25/11/2021 17:57

Misread the bit about your partner not liking Esme!
What about Emilia, Rose, Ivy, Isobel, Ruby, Frances or Flora?

CatonMat · 25/11/2021 17:56

I love it.
Feminine, just a bit unusual, strong.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 25/11/2021 17:55

If you don't like all the potential nicknames for Florence I would pick another name. It's hard to pick which nickname will stick and if you find Florence a mouthful then there are many other similar names to go for.

Esme is lovely and goes well with Isla.
