First baby due soon.
We don’t know what we’re having, but have a boys name picked out.

Girls names we do like:
Mirran
Ava
Grace
Mairead

I think all the names are beautiful, but when I had my babies I couldn't imagine choosing a name for them before they were born.
Even tiny babies have their own personalities, so we had a "short list" of names that we liked, and once we met out little newborns the decision for a name became crystal clear.
In both cases one name just suddenly became obvious as being perfect- it took a few days, but in the end an easy choice.
You have 3 weeks in the UK to register a birth and decide a name.
If you are not sure then waiting until you meet your baby may be an option. You don't need to decide before the birth.

Ava Grace or Mirren Grace
Grace is a good choice for a middle name!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/11/2021 03:36

Mirren's lovely and would be my pick.
Ava is beautiful too but very trendy now (most will be under 20, so you need to consider if you care it might date her in future?).
Grace is a classic but much too overused currently for my taste (as a middle name too which makes it seem more ubiquitous).
Sorry, not very keen on the sound of Mairead.

Fivebeanchilli · 24/11/2021 22:57

Mirren is beautiful.
Ava is lovely but too popular.
I've never liked Grace. It just seems dull.
Mairead looks very pretty but I think I have been pronouncing it wrongly as I would have said muh - RAID (which I do like but appears to be incorrect 😳).
I would definitely pick Mirren though.

MrsFin · 24/11/2021 22:17

Mirran.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 24/11/2021 22:17

Mairead

Stressymcstress · 24/11/2021 19:09

@scottishnames
Didn’t notice I’d spelt it wrong! Yes, definitely would be Mirren. Thanks for the link.

We’d be going for the Irish pronunciation of Mairead,

I would spell my favourite- Mirren
scottishnames · 24/11/2021 18:36

The Scottish Mairead's I've known prounouce it 'MIGHR-rehd'. All quite soft.

WhatHoMarjorie · 24/11/2021 18:10

I think Mirran is lovely. Sounds fresher than Ava or Grace.

I think Mairead is pronounced my-rit in Scotland (as opposed to the Irish muh-raid pronunciation)? I'm not massively keen on it.

scottishnames · 24/11/2021 18:06

OP I don't know precisely where you are but Mirren is the usual spelling in Scotland.
Originally a male name en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mirin it's become used for males and females.
There is also the Irish /crossover Scottish Gaelic name Murieann (pronounced 'Murren' or 'Mirren').
This thread below is very dated, but you perhaps might want to look at it. It's rather critical but I don't think that matters. If you like a name, go for it! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/1521203-If-you-are-in-Scotland-how-is-the-name-Mirren-regarded

Mairead is nice, also.

Stressymcstress · 23/11/2021 10:00

I definitely know a few Ava’s.

I don’t know anyone called Grace - didn’t realise it was so popular. Maybe depends what area.

Thanks everyone!

Mirran is beautiful

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/11/2021 07:27

Mirran is great

Ava and Grace are lovely classics but god they are overused.

Mairead is OK, it’s a bit drab.

DukkaDukka · 22/11/2021 19:15

Ava and Grace are massively overused, you hear them everywhere.

FawnDrench · 22/11/2021 18:39

Mirran is lovely!

TatianaBis · 22/11/2021 17:11

Mirran by miles.

mrsrobin · 22/11/2021 15:41

Mirran and Mairead for me

DidgeDoolittle · 22/11/2021 15:37

I agree that Mirran is the nicest.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/11/2021 15:32

i love Grace- cant stand Ava with the popularity- Mairead is awful and Mirran is nice but I do think Helen instinctively

Luckingfovely · 22/11/2021 15:28

Mirran is the best (even though it autocorrects to Mirena Grin)

Kite22 · 22/11/2021 15:27

Well, because folk often say that names are perceived differently in different countries.
Plus, pronunciation can be more challenging to some accents than others.

I, for example, don't know how to say Mairead, but it might be obvious to everyone where you live Smile

Strokethefurrywall · 22/11/2021 15:26

Mirran for sure, it’s gorgeous!

Ava and Grace both nice but very popular. Not keen on Mairead.

MissLC · 22/11/2021 15:10

I really like Mirran, its not a name that's heard often but is really pretty and not too out there.
