Can I get away with DAMM initials?

DH and I have finally agreed on name for DD2 but realised initials will be DAMM! Is that really awful?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Thereisnoname · 21/11/2021 12:40

I think its fine, my daughters are EAT and she really likes that they spell a word. And my sisters also spelt a phrase think along the linea of ASAP.
You don't really use initials very often and not in a formal setting anyway.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 21/11/2021 12:25

I asked my friend Fraser Urquhart Colin Knight and he says DAMM is fine

StrawberrySanta · 21/11/2021 12:22

What's the big deal with Damm? I don't understand. There's a road near me called Damm road that's the main thing i think of, and beavers damms. I genuinely don't see any negative connotation

Courtier · 21/11/2021 11:58

I don't think she will care plus remember people have weird initials all the time after changing surnames. Mine will become SAW when I marry DP 😂

NewlyGranny · 21/11/2021 11:58

DH went to school with a lad called Philip Ennis. So far, so good, but at upper secondary his parents got him as briefcase personalised it in gold letters: P Ennis. I can't tell you here what they called him after that, but there was trouble when he was being loudly encouraged on the football pitch.

I think it can matter and it's unkind to make any dubious CVC word from a child's initials. Why not swap the D and A around and tell everyone she's Avril Diana, to be known as Diana?

DietrichandDiMaggio · 21/11/2021 11:52

@celestebellman

I think it's fine - if it were DAMN might be different. Even then, who pays attention to initials anyway?
Yes. It's as if nobody knows how to spell damn (presuming that's the 'issue'.
AntiCornLawLeague · 21/11/2021 11:51

I couldn't get too worked up about it tbh. I would only avoid something like BJ maybe.

Daisy4569 · 21/11/2021 11:50

If you’re thinking about kids they generally don’t have a clue what each other’s middle names are let alone invest time in working out initials.

SummerSazz · 21/11/2021 11:48

My Dcs school used to have their first and surname embroidered on their PE tops. Now due, I suspect to data protection/child protection, they now just have their initials so I wouldn't!

icedancerlenny · 21/11/2021 11:46

I don’t understand the problem. If you’re worried about the ‘swear’ word, it’s spelt damn

Yika · 21/11/2021 11:42

I don’t think it’s particularly problematic as it doesn’t spell DAMN. If it bothers you you could consider adding a middle initial (rather than an extra name) eg Delilah Amelia J. Surname Surname.

SpinachIsAGatewayDrug · 21/11/2021 11:38

Whoever uses their full initials including middle names? I don't think I've ever had to in my life!

PlanktonsComputerWife · 21/11/2021 11:37

My childhood best friend's initials were KKK till she got married. That's definitely worse.

GuppytheCat · 21/11/2021 11:36

My brothers were taught by an F. A. R. Thompson, and every bloody kid in two schools knew his initials.

gggrrrargh · 21/11/2021 11:33

I think it’s fine.

You’ve reminded me at school I made up an extra middle name so I could pretend my initials spelt the word Slab Grin It was one of those weird things kids were boasting about, in the ‘I’ve got this, yeah well I’ve got this’ kinda way. So it definitely wouldn’t have been a problem in my school!

thisisnotagooduseofmytime · 21/11/2021 11:27

Wouldn't bother me

proopher · 21/11/2021 11:22

I don't understand why DAMM would be bad. Is it because it's similar to 'damn'?

InTheLabyrinth · 21/11/2021 11:00

I am literally always full initials, as otherwise my boss and I cant be distinguished in actions issued in meetings - we are both IL, so he is IXL and I'm ITL. Depending on where you work, initials can be used frequently, or not at all.

justabigdisco · 21/11/2021 10:47

I literally never use my full initials, including middle name. Only ever FirstnameSurname

ThirdElephant · 21/11/2021 10:42

@crimblecrumbles

Amelia is a family member name so reluctant to change it
How about Amelie? Very similar but removes the double -ia sound.
Mouseonmychair · 21/11/2021 10:19

Sounds fine to me.it won't be an issue. I don't think anyone knows my middle names anyway except immediate family.

Fivebeanchilli · 21/11/2021 10:02

I'm surprised by how few people use their initials. We use ours all the time at work but, to be fair, only use the middle initial when there's a clash of first and last initials (surprisingly common). Dc1 just started uni this year and their initials are their uni identifier so on email address, key card etc (and they didn't know before arriving so no opportunity to change anything).
Having said all of that, DAMM wouldn't bother me at all.

Onceuponatimethen · 21/11/2021 09:53

I think Delilah and Amelia are both lovely names but not mad keen on how they sound together. I agree with pp they will run into each other when said and actually contain lots of similar sounds..

EileenGC · 21/11/2021 09:44

@MadameGazellee right, you can notice and pick up on it, but does anyone really give it a second thought? I’d think ‘oh, okay’. Wouldn’t you?

Same with name announcements - I read the new baby’s full name, think ‘nice’ (unless the child is called Ballonz), zoom in on the picture to see their little face/toes/head bow and then keep scrolling down. With respect to the OP and any other new mothers, that’s the reaction people will have, because my life doesn’t revolve around friends’ babies’ name announcements Grin

OhMyCrump · 21/11/2021 09:42

I don't think it matters. When do you even use all your initials like that? Other than bowling, when it would just be a bit of a laugh anyway!
