We want to use the a variation of the name Maria, but not Maria / Marie/ Miriam/ Mary. What are the useable variations of this name which are as close to Maria as possible?
I have found:
Marianna
Marissa
Marina
Marialisa
Marialina

I know there are others like
Anna-Maria
Maria-Louisa
However, I’m not keen on a hyphenated name, looking for a name that doesn’t have a hyphen in between.

Mariel or Marielle. - beautiful.
Marieke is nice too as is Maryam

ZittiEBuoni · 20/11/2021 18:31

I'm a fan of the ballerina Marianela Nunez, which has made me love the name.

Aozora13 · 20/11/2021 18:30

I love Marianne. I also like Marysia (pronounced Ma-rish-a) which I think is a Polish diminutive of Maria.

Mari34 · 20/11/2021 18:28

Mari of course!

LadyWithLapdog · 20/11/2021 18:20

@WildImaginings

Mariska. Hungarian name pronounced 'Mah-reesh-kah'.
Or Marika.
Ronacorona · 20/11/2021 17:44

Moira - Gaelic for Mary

PointeShoesandTutus · 20/11/2021 17:28

Marianela (as in like the ballerina)

Or just Maria itself is lovely.

WildImaginings · 20/11/2021 17:21

Mariska. Hungarian name pronounced 'Mah-reesh-kah'.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 20/11/2021 17:07

Marianela, nn Nela, like the dancer.

I know a Marissa. And there’s Mariska, like the actress.

thegreylady · 20/11/2021 17:03

Miriam
Mary (best of all)
Mhairi

VanillaAndOrange · 20/11/2021 16:59

I quite like Marian and Mariel(le).

TataMamma · 19/11/2021 10:27

Not Marissa please - makes me think of Mrs Coulter!
Marian is also similarish and not mentioned so far I think.
Or Mary-Rose, Rosemary, are maybe possibilities, along with Ann-Marie or Ann Marie or Annemarie if you don't like hyphens (and I agree with that).

Fabuleuse · 19/11/2021 07:19

Mairi
Marysia

BruiserWoods · 18/11/2021 20:57

Marianne is much more elegant than Marianna.

I like Marina too. And Marielle

FlamingoDust · 18/11/2021 20:55

Marialena is what I meant to write but my phone didn't like it!

FlamingoDust · 18/11/2021 20:54

Marielena

toadstool32 · 18/11/2021 15:00

Mia

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2021 14:52

I used to work with a Mara, and thought that was lovely.

Marianne is beautiful.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/11/2021 14:38

Thanks @TheSpiral

I won't lie. I was inordinately pleased with that one.

Chunkymenrock · 18/11/2021 11:05

Ria?

minipie · 18/11/2021 10:55

I like lots of these names (especially Marianne) but wouldn’t think of them as being connected to Maria.

If you want to honour someone called Maria why not use Maria as a middle name and choose a different first name that you like.

Shasha17 · 18/11/2021 10:33

I would consider Mary and Maria and Miriam far more usable that Marialisa or Marialina in the UK.
