Aloysius

What are your thoughts on the name Aloysius? I'm not sure if it's more expected in a devout Catholic family rather than a non-religious household. I think Ally would be cute nickname, and makes the name more accessible as it fits in with the more popular Alexander and Alastair.

Imagine having to go through your whole life spelling out that name to everyone.

SwedishEdith · 10/11/2021 23:12

Nun name

midsomermurderess · 10/11/2021 21:42

It calls to my mind the Catholic school in Glasgow. Rather different from 'pretentious'.

cheapskatemum · 10/11/2021 21:25

I've always loved it.

Onlinedilema · 10/11/2021 21:13

I quite like it. It's a lot to !I've up to though.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 10/11/2021 21:09

I've met one in real life. He was nn Al . Was from the travelling community and he and his siblings all had fabulous names.

Lesserspottedmama · 10/11/2021 21:06

Oh I love it! Marvellous name. I dread to think how many pregnant women come away from this site feeling resigned to having to stick to Oliver/Joshua/Charlie etc just in case any other slightly more interesting name is branded as ‘pretentious’. There is not a single name you can call a child that Mumsnet doesn’t consider to be either pretentious, common, dated or twee - every name falls into one of those categories, every name.

LynetteScavo · 10/11/2021 20:56

[quote toastofthetown]Like Al oh ish us. Here's a website which has some pronunciations recorded, because I can't type in IPA!

It doesn't sound good in a French accent!

Parsley1234 · 10/11/2021 20:54

Seems like a waste to name a child Aloysius and then call him Ally. May as well just be Alastair. If you chose a statement name, you should own it.

ShesComeUndone · 10/11/2021 20:47

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned H..h..h..Hancock’s Half Hour yet! Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock, the lad himself.

nousernamehere01 · 10/11/2021 20:45

Gaelic that should say 😅😅

nousernamehere01 · 10/11/2021 20:45

I love the name! If I remember correctly there was an Aloysius in Skins who went by that and Alo which is quite nice! It sounds very Garlic to me but I could be very wrong and just getting the vibe hah!

Snozzlemaid · 10/11/2021 20:42

My dad didn't have a middle name but always joked it was Aloysius. So it's a no from me.

CathyorClaire · 10/11/2021 20:40

Not unless you're planning on giving birth to a teddy.

Queenie6655 · 10/11/2021 20:37

Awful

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 20:30

I always here that name as allo-wishes. Definitely not a name I would go for.

MsFogi · 10/11/2021 20:27

It was on my list of names (although DH vetoed it). To me it is an Irish old person's name (like Ruby was an English old persons name until its recent revival) - I had a couple of Great (or great great) uncles with the name. They both had the nn Alo.

BruiserWoods · 10/11/2021 20:26

Not uncommon in Ireland. They're usually in their 80s. I'm not a fan though.

BingBongToTheMoon · 10/11/2021 20:25

@Postdatedpandemic oh I thought it was his kids……I googled.

stereeotype · 10/11/2021 20:24

I sounds really silly sorry OP. Why subject your child to a name people are mainly not going to be able to pronounce?

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/11/2021 20:22

Oh why not. Brideshead is a great book.

You'd have to be happy with him adopting Al tho..

FenceSplinters · 10/11/2021 20:11

I like it! It was on our shortlist for ds.

Postdatedpandemic · 10/11/2021 20:10

@BingBongToTheMoon

No he doesn’t have an Aloysius.
You know Moggs teddy bears by name Shock
Caspianberg · 10/11/2021 20:08

The name Alois is very common where we live. Similar style, not as long. Pronounced kind of like ‘al-llyos’.
