How popular is Ellis?

I know I know, it shouldn't matter - but I don't want him to be one of 4 (like my friends Alfie was!) I quite like it and keep coming back to it but not sure I love it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I know one, a girl in her 20s.

PurBal · 10/11/2021 17:51

I know one

TuftyMarmoset · 10/11/2021 17:50

I’m surprised it’s so high too, I’ve never heard of it as a first name, only as a surname (eg American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis, or Sophie Ellis-Bextor).

Angel2702 · 10/11/2021 17:39

Nice name, I only know one who is a teenager now.

thewhatsit · 10/11/2021 17:01

@toastofthetown

It's #89 in England and Wales for boys.
I’m really surprised about this, I don’t think I’ve met an Ellis or even heard of one.
Irishfarmer · 10/11/2021 16:52

@TheCreamCaker I've never heard of that as a baby name. It's a town in Co. Clare in Ireland

TheCreamCaker · 10/11/2021 16:37

I like it. I know of an Ennis too, which I also like

toastofthetown · 10/11/2021 15:18

@MyMILisLovely

Elis is popular in Wales
Yes looking at the stats from 2020 Elis was #31 and Ellis #52 in Wales. Combining those spellings would put the name in the top ten. As a pp said above, name trends are localised, so the national trends can only tell you so much.
Roselilly36 · 10/11/2021 15:16

I know two Ellis’ one male one female.

Lemonsyellow · 10/11/2021 15:15

I know two young ones - both under three.

Spunout · 10/11/2021 15:11

I'm in Wales and only ever known one,16 year old now.

MyMILisLovely · 10/11/2021 15:07

Elis is popular in Wales

sofakingcool · 10/11/2021 14:29

I work in childcare, we had a couple in last years cohort and none this year

Classica · 10/11/2021 14:09

Good name. It's hard to know if a name will leap in popularity as there are so many unpredictable factors involved. With regards to Alfie it's been pretty popular for 20 years now so I suspect your friend picked it because she liked it (naturally!) and then only realised how any of them there were once her own Alfie was born. Ellis is unlikely to reach Alfie heights imo.

SummaLuvin · 10/11/2021 14:03

Presuming you are based in the UK you can download baby name data (covering England and Wales) from the government website, it is released on an annual basis. Ellis was 89th in 2020, but would be higher if you included spelling of Elis.

You can also use the website Darkergreen which allows you to type in a name and it shows the trend since 1996, so you can see if it is increasing, declining, or stagnant in use. names.darkgreener.com

Worth bearing in mind that regional and cultural trends exist within the country, rural areas typically being more traditional, and cities with both more modern/new names and names which originate from other countries.

toastofthetown · 10/11/2021 14:03

If you are interesting in name popularity in general the Darkgreener site makes the ONS data very easy to access:

I like it and it’s not too popular.
