Thoughts on this name please?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Funnily i just heard this being used for the first time this evening, someone calling after a little boy in a shop.

Honestly it's not my cup of tea, I like a lot of Skandi style names but this isn't one. I don't like the sound of it and it brings to mind the axle of a car. There's also something about it trying hard to be edgy and cool to my mind.

It's not offensive and like others have said it's getting more and more popular.

EgweneWoT · 07/11/2021 17:49

Axel is a lovely name. If you’re keen on it, go for it. 🙂

Chunkymenrock · 07/11/2021 17:47

Greasy, smelly car part.

Mrgrinch · 07/11/2021 17:43

Hate it

Verybritishproblems98 · 07/11/2021 17:42

I love this name! I watch The Middle a lot and that’s the sons name. Great name x

WalkingOnSonshine · 07/11/2021 16:42

It’s had a huge jump in popularity over the past 5 years or so, it’s likely to feel very dated to this particular time period if you don’t have wider Scandinavian links.

One of the Little Mix singers named her son this. It seems to be quite popular with some of the younger Instagrammers who are having children too.

DramaAlpaca · 07/11/2021 16:39

Not for me. The only one I've known was...well, let's just say a bit of a handful.

moocow123 · 07/11/2021 16:25

Love it!!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 07/11/2021 16:01

Dont like it. Know one and I dont like him much which is probably clouding my judgement.

BeKindBeYou · 07/11/2021 15:57

I love it!!!!

Synchrony · 07/11/2021 13:23

Well it's the 168th most popular boy name in 2020 with over 300 born. It's not to my taste but I certainly wouldn't think anything bad if I met a little Axel! I do think of the illustrator, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

toastofthetown · 07/11/2021 13:22

I’ve no idea where all the negative comments are from. Axel is a perfectly normal Scandinavian name. It’s gaining popularity in England and Wales, now at #168, tied with Finlay, so hardly bizarre or uncommon or deserving of ‘get a grip’ type comments. Not everyone wants to call their children George and Oliver. I’d avoid it personally based on how it’s rocketed up the charts and it a bit trendy for me. It’s a nice name outside of that though.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 07/11/2021 13:19

German name. If you like it, use it.

TurnUpTurnip · 07/11/2021 13:18

I think of axel foley too! Didn’t Perrie Edwards just name her son axel? No need for rude comments

ChalfontPark · 07/11/2021 13:18

@12548ehe9fnfobms

Please don't. Poor child. The only famous Axel is Axel Rose from Guns and Roses. He raped a 14 year old girl and got away with it. He also has a track record in domestic violence against women.
Axel Scheffler is far more famous than Axel Rose these days! I really like it, but it does make me think immediately of Axel Scheffler.
LemonWeb · 07/11/2021 13:16

I love it: I think of the fantastic illustrator for the gruffalo stories axel scheffler.

StrongerOrWeaker · 07/11/2021 13:15

I know a couple of men called Axel and I like it. They are both foreign. Perhaps the other posters hadn't come across the name before because it is more used in other parts of the world.

FenceSplinters · 07/11/2021 13:15

I like it a lot. Go for it!

EnidFrighten · 07/11/2021 13:12

This isn't true, axel scheffler plus it's a fairly common name in Germany, Scandinavia etc plus no one under 40 gives a toss about guns n roses!

I like it

Duchess379 · 07/11/2021 13:09

I love it! I think of Axel Foley!! (Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop)

loveinthe90s · 07/11/2021 13:08

Lovely name, Scandinavian I think. Why are people so rude about different cultures? Nobody else heard of the German illustrator Axel Scheffler?

DukkaDukka · 07/11/2021 13:03

It just makes me think of a car.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/11/2021 12:15

What is with all the weird baby name threads?

Calicoqueen · 07/11/2021 12:14

Someone I knew named her baby axel because she thought it felt powerful... I hated it Hmm

1980sbairns · 07/11/2021 12:13

Love it!
