Stuck between these two, which would you choose and why?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@MollysDolly

Sophie is bland.

Fiona is lovely.

I'd wouldn't pick it however, because I wouldn't be able to bear the inevitable shortenings of Fi and worse, FiFi. Makes me think of a pretentious mother announcing her daughter's pony deliberately loudly in the playground. Grin

Several Sophias I know are known as Fia or FiFi.

Of the fabulous Fionas I know, they are only called Fi by a couple of people, not generally,

Heartsandroses · 03/11/2021 21:00

I have a Sophie so I’ll say that name lol
Sophie Louisa-she’s almost 25 and we’ve never met another one for some reason

SirChenjins · 03/11/2021 20:57

Sophie - Fiona is a very common name from the 60s/70s up here, on par with Karen, Sharon, Lesley, that kind of name.

CathyorClaire · 03/11/2021 20:54

Sophie.

Am old enough to have known more than a few Fionas but can count the nice ones on the thumbs of one hand.

RuthW · 03/11/2021 20:48

Fiona. My fav name

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 03/11/2021 20:46

I have a Sophie but Fiona was on my list too and vetoed by exh. Great choices.
Fiona definitely fewer about - Dd2 is most perturbed that having been the only one in the school there are now 3 😂🤣

Cheeseballer · 03/11/2021 20:45

Sophie

Angel2702 · 03/11/2021 20:43

Fiona pretty name due a comeback. Sophie is a lovely name but now seems a bit boring as there are so many.

Synchrony · 03/11/2021 20:41

Fiona because it was on our shortlist. Love it!

Kitkat151 · 03/11/2021 20:35

Fiona. Sophie is a bit meh.

ParmigianoReggiano · 03/11/2021 20:27

Sophie

Thepennysjustdropped · 03/11/2021 20:25

Both are lovely. I think I'd go for Fiona for the Celtic vibe. Sophie is a bit girly - I prefer Sophia, which is more classical (means wisdom).

gluenotsoup · 03/11/2021 20:24

Sophie! In 15 years teaching I only taught one, and only know of 2 others. Fiona- taught one, but I think it’s not as pretty as Sophie

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 03/11/2021 20:22

Fiona. Definitely. It was never super popular (well, in England, possibly was in Scotland), I can think of 2 in my school of 1,000 in the 80s, so it’s not dated. Fresh and a real name with real roots.

I’d love to meet a baby Fiona!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2021 20:20

They're both good but Fiona has my vote.

midsomermurderess · 03/11/2021 20:18

Fiona. I'd say it's due a comeback. There were so many Fionas about when I was a kid in the 1970s. It seems fresh now. Sophie by contrast, a bit tired.

bloominglovelyorange · 03/11/2021 19:08

Much prefer Sophie

Cruiser123 · 03/11/2021 19:08

Go with Fiona 😊 it's my name, so I'm biased.

Treecreature · 03/11/2021 19:05

Sophie is so much nicer.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/11/2021 19:03

Fiona! Because long time no Fiona.

Tal45 · 03/11/2021 19:02

Sophie is more popular for a reason IMO. Although I prefer Sophia personally. Fiona is quite a hard sounding name I think and the only one I know is over 50.

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2021 19:00

Fiona, it's really lovely. Sophie is gorgeous too, but Fiona is much rarer now.

BungleandGeorge · 03/11/2021 18:59

There’s an equally large number of Fiona’s around, it’s not particularly unusual. There just aren’t many that are children! I don’t know that many Sophie’s either (more Sofia) I think both are nice, any go wrong with either really
