Been thinking of Arabic names and so far Samar has been my favourite.

What do you think of it as a little girl’s name ?

My mil recommended Irha but I’m not a big fan of it

It's a lovely name and one I would think was a girls name.
Nouria would have been my choice if I was having a girl.
Irhas quite difficult to pronounce correctly unless you speak Arabic or urdu.

I prefer Samara. That has 2 diminutives — Sam and Mara.

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 04/11/2021 11:43

I really like it

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/11/2021 11:41

I like Noor too. Elegant and unfrilly.

AttaGirrrrl · 04/11/2021 11:41

I’d say Samir was the male version and would recognise Samar as female. I think I’d pronounce it Same-ar until you corrected me though. Samira and Samaria are also lovely.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 04/11/2021 11:40

I like samar. And also noor.

Skeumorph · 04/11/2021 11:38

Nice name, and easy to pronounce, can't really go wrong.

Irha probably more difficult to get to sound 'right'.

Love Noor though!

PompomDahlia · 03/11/2021 16:51

I’d go for Samara which definitely sounds like a girls name, and very lovely

Piapea · 03/11/2021 05:26

Samar is gorgeous. One of my favourite Arabic names. I also love Layan and Noor. I taught in the UAE for a while and I always loved these particular names as they aren't that 'frilly'. They all sound quite cool.

ThirdElephant · 03/11/2021 05:08

I prefer Samara and Samia, personally.

However, I wouldn't let PP saying they'd presume it's a boy's name bother you tbh. People who are familiar with the name will know, and people who aren't will learn.

LostInTheColonies · 03/11/2021 04:58

I know a Samia - any good? And Samara.

Elspethelf · 03/11/2021 03:21

My husband's cousin is Samar and everyone calls her Summer which I think is lovely. I would have no idea how to pronounce Irha. I think Samar is more wearable

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/11/2021 00:12

I think it’s lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2021 00:10

I like Samar very much.

Retrievemysanity · 02/11/2021 14:05

Samara and Samira are beautiful. I don’t dislike Samar but like pp, it seems masculine to me.

Eeve · 02/11/2021 14:03

Samara also lovely

SlothMamaToBe · 02/11/2021 14:02

This is my nieces name but it’s spelt Sama

Eeve · 02/11/2021 14:02

Go for Samira!! Lovely name. I would assume Samar was a boys name (in the Uk) if that bothers you.

MrsFin · 02/11/2021 13:57

Not Jood though. Samar is nice.

NellieBertram · 02/11/2021 13:50

I like Samar and Samara.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 02/11/2021 13:48

I only know women named Samar.
So would probably make the assumption she was a girl.
Also it sounds a little like 'Summer' to an Anglophone ear and that's more of a girl's name

chayago · 02/11/2021 13:46

@Namechangedforthethousandthtim

I thought it was a boy's name? I know a male Samar 🤔
It’s unisex but I don’t want to give her a name that sounds too masculine so I’ll definitely take that into account Thank you

@Pumpkinsonparade

I know a Samira.
Yes! That’s one big reason why I want to name the baby Samar. My auntie who’s like a second mum to me and can’t have children is called Samira and I thought it would be a nice hommage to her
