My sister kind of stole my baby name :(

I told my sister a few months back that I really liked the name Judah for a boy. We were both expecting boys but she was dead set on calling her baby boy River so I thought I was on safe ground telling her my choice. Anyway she just came out of hospital and announced out tof the blu that her baby was to be Jude. I am completely gobsmacked and quite upset to be honest but I'm not prepared to cause a massive fuss and a fall out over a name. Anyway just wanted some advice, would you still call your baby Judah if your sister had named their baby Jude? Or do you all think I should just bow out graciously and go with my second choice which is Josiah or my hubby's first choice which is Theodore/Theo/Teddy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@DifficultBloodyWoman

I’ve always thought of Jude as a girl’s name, like the song, ‘hey Jude’.

Your husband’s choices are all much nicer.

oh for the love of everything that is Beatles

"Hey Jude" refers and was written to Julian Lennon, John Lennon's first born son.
the song title has nothing to do with any girls.

Jude is a boys' name.
I think you are confusing it with Judy

Suzi888 · 02/11/2021 03:53

Mean not man!

Suzi888 · 02/11/2021 03:53

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

if you haven't brought it up yet then wait until she does. then tell her that suggesting Judah was a diversion tactic because you didn't want to tell anyone the ACTUAL name you picked.

mwahaha

^ 🤣🤣🤣🤣

But honestly, name your baby whatever you’d like to.
Your sister is man spirited and selfish, keep that in mind in future.

Judah is too close to Judas. Josiah is gorgeous.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 02/11/2021 02:20

Your other options are actually better, particularly Theodore, nevertheless your sister was nasty.

teezletangler · 02/11/2021 00:41

Wow that's terrible OP. I am sorry. I can't imagine choosing a name that was in any way close to my sister's chosen name.

I love the name Judah. I had a huge crush on one as a teen, he was so lovely. You should still call your son Judah! Don't let her take your name.

GatoradeMeBitch · 02/11/2021 00:41

would you still call your baby Judah if your sister had named their baby Jude?

Erm no Grin But now it's basically off the table I think Judah sounds too much like Judas, your LO would spend the rest of their life hearing about how they are almost named Judas.

Both your other options sound much nicer and give your DS more than one option for a nickname.

Aria999 · 02/11/2021 00:33

You could keep 'accidentally' calling your DN Judas. Fitting.

I also think Josiah is a great name and Judah is a bit meh fwiw. Less keen on Theodore as he would get Teddy which I hate.

notangelinajolie · 02/11/2021 00:31

If you want to call your baby Judah then you should. Don't let the name your sister has chosen for her son put you off. She knows what name you wanted so I can't see how she can be upset.

However, I think she has done you a favour. Josiah and Theodore are much nicer names than Judah which is far to samey to Judas.

GreenLunchBox · 02/11/2021 00:24

Josiah and Theodore are lovely. I'd probably go with the latter

GreenLunchBox · 02/11/2021 00:23

@NewtoHolland

It's out of order of her, but Judah reminds me of Judas which is commonly used as an insult, Josiah or Theodore are lovely.
I was going to say I don't like Judah because it reminds me of Judas. In fact I'm sorry but Judah is horrible
MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 02/11/2021 00:22

Much prefer Josiah, Joseph or even something like Orson.

TaraR2020 · 02/11/2021 00:20

@yoghurtdaily that's a terrible thing for your sister to have done. I'm so sorry you lost boy Flowers

Autumnleaves4 · 02/11/2021 00:18

I prefer your other choices to .Judah, I think this has negative connotations, when I was young people would call you a Judah as a disloyal person after Judas so I definitely don’t likethis name. I think she has saved you. But ?I would still make it clear you are not happy with her.

DoleWhipFloat · 02/11/2021 00:15

Love Theodore; love Josiah. Not fussed on Jude or Judah anyway.

She’s done you a favour.

WeeWeeWeeeee · 02/11/2021 00:08

Josiah is a beautiful name. Whatever you settle on, I’d not give your sister the satisfaction of realising you are upset (however tempting it is to apologise for misleading her as you never know who you can trust when it comes to baby names…” Grin).

Italiangreyhound · 02/11/2021 00:00

Oh and Jonah is a brilliant name.

Italiangreyhound · 01/11/2021 23:59

"She's always playing the ' I can do better game' and to be honest I can't be bothered with it anymore. My whole family is pretty toxic and I've had to walk away from them all to preserve my sanity. I'll just let her have the name (not that I have much choice) I have a lovely family and I really should just focus on that."

If you are cutting her out of your life it doesn't matter that her son has a name similar to yours. Honesty, just do what is right for you.

Italiangreyhound · 01/11/2021 23:54

Josiah is much nicer than Judah but in my humble opinion go with the name YOU want.

Yes, dad's do get a say so too! But, ultimately, as you are carrying baby you get first call, (IMHO).

My dad's name is shared by cousin, my aunt's name is shared by another cousin, my in-laws have all male firstborns with the same name, (although use abbreviated names for them all), and lastly my FIl, and his father have the same name and my son has it as a middle name.

You don't need to fall out with your sister, you can use the name you chose and she can use it too.

Elliethebear · 01/11/2021 23:52

Teddy is the most gorgeous name! Judah sounds a little close to Judas for me anyway 😬 Theo is super cute too

toomuchlaundry · 01/11/2021 23:50

Think your sister has done you a favour as like your alternative names better

penni00 · 01/11/2021 23:49

There is also the issue of the song 'Hey Jude' which could be used to mock a child endlessly in school.

Milliepossum · 01/11/2021 23:49

Theodore is a much nicer name, you might even have others on your list by the time you need to make a choice. Your sister is a cow. Good luck with everything 🌸

Hottbutterscotch · 01/11/2021 23:47

@yoghurtdaily my mouth stayed wide open long after I read that.
Really really disgusting on so many levels. I’m really sorry that your Elijah isn’t here with you and also for the hurt you must now be feeling.
You already know it’s a vile thing to do but just offering a few words of moral support
