Thea as thatch not as in thee

Lochroy · 29/10/2021 22:22

Thee-a? Really? As in the same as the? Old fashioned way of saying you? I'm surprised it's so popular. I would have thought the 'The' part of 'Thea' sounded like a phonic 'th'.

PrivateParty · 29/10/2021 22:07

Thee ah

Lynne1Cat · 29/10/2021 21:57

I'd say Thee-a

Lovesicecreams · 29/10/2021 21:55

Thee (rhymes with me) - uh

RacketeerRalph · 29/10/2021 21:54

Th ee a.

I know like 5 of them!

LittleBearPad · 29/10/2021 21:34

In the UK Thee-a

TatianaBis · 29/10/2021 21:34

@SweetBabyCheeses99

Your husband is correct. No offence but I would only expect chavs to be pronouncing it wrong.
😂

Nope. Both are equally ‘correct’.

In the U.K. it’s generally pronounced Thee a or Thay a. In Greece it’s Thaya. In France it’s Taya.

RestingStitchFace · 29/10/2021 21:31

I had a classmate called Thea years ago. She pronounced it Tey-A. (Universally mispronounced by everyone else though.)

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 29/10/2021 21:30

We know an 11 year old Thea - pronounced Tay-a

Fivebeanchilli · 29/10/2021 21:30

Like the beginning of theatre.
I do know one pronounced Tay - a but she's Danish.

TuftyMarmoset · 29/10/2021 21:29

Thee-uh with my English hat on. Tay-ah with my German hat on. I need to buy actual hats

TatianaBis · 29/10/2021 21:26

Thee a or Thay a.

LynetteScavo · 29/10/2021 21:25

Thee-ah

Although when DS2 was a toddler he said Fee-ah (like fear) which is why DD isn't called Thea.

It's a lovely name, and I'm sure in other countries it's pronounced differently.

feelingsicknow · 29/10/2021 21:15

I always pronounced it Thee-ah but went to a birthday party of a little girl in my son's nursery class called Thea, and her mum was pronouncing it 'Tay-ah'. But they are of Indian heritage and her English wasn't great, so I am still none the wiser. I've started pronouncing it like the mum, just in case.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/10/2021 21:08

Pronounce it how ever you like, think of Hyacinth Bucket,
or
Adam Cockburn.

Creepypastard · 29/10/2021 20:56

@SweetBabyCheeses99

Your husband is correct. No offence but I would only expect chavs to be pronouncing it wrong.
I'd also expect arseholes to correct people with an accent....
emmathedilemma · 29/10/2021 20:55

Th-ee-a
As in thee to rhyme with flea

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 29/10/2021 20:54

Your husband is correct. No offence but I would only expect chavs to be pronouncing it wrong.

1940s · 29/10/2021 20:51

The only one I've ever known (40years old) was Tay-uh

Dasher789 · 29/10/2021 20:46

I used to work with a Thee ah. Not aware anyone called her any other variation due to confusion.

TataMamma · 29/10/2021 20:33

I've known 2. One said "Fee-uh" and one "Tay-uh". Your family can carry on having arguments :).

DariaMorgendorffer · 29/10/2021 20:32

Tey-a

SmallestInTheClass · 29/10/2021 20:27

Thee a for the British pronounciation. I had a Norwegian friend who spelt it Tea and pronounced it Tay a though. I guess the name is Tay a in any language that doesn’t have a th sound, so either would be fine IMO, but you would need to clarify for people which way you want it pronounced. It’s a very pretty name.
