What do you all think of the name Emmeline? Nn Emme / Emmie.

Does everyone pronounce it "Emma-Leen"?

Trying to pic some girls names for our list after my favourite was vetoed. Heard this band a few years ago and keen to hear current opinions on it...

Thanks everyone

One of my favourite names.

swingsandroundabouts222 · 28/10/2022 15:30

I like Emmelina (leena).

Dassams · 28/10/2022 14:32

Emmaline is Emma-leen

Emmeline is Emme-leen

sopeas · 28/10/2022 14:19

Emma Leen
Emma Lyn
Emma Line

it’s another one of those like Mad uh line, lane, lyn - I’d never know which pronunciation which may be an annoyance to your dd with people just hazarding a guess when they see it written down

fwiw I think Emm uh line is the nicest pronunciation

DuchessOfSausage · 28/10/2022 07:50

Not keen. Emma is much nicer.

Mrs Pankhurst was Emma-line.

I’m sorry to revive this thread but searching baby names and wanted to correct this.

Mrs Pankhurst was Em-uh-leen; the British pronunciation.

Emmeline is gorgeous 🥰

toastofthetown · 26/10/2021 16:55

I pronounce it like Emily, but with an N sound. I’m not a fan. It’s a bit clunky sounding to me.

IamMaz · 26/10/2021 16:44

Takes me back to the Hot Chocolate hit...
I loved Errol Brown.
It's a beautiful name.

NewLifePending · 26/10/2021 16:36

I am an Emmaline (pronounced Emmaleen) but mostly go by Emma these days

cushioncovers · 26/10/2021 16:35

Love it. Pronounced Emma line to me.

EnidFrighten · 26/10/2021 16:32

I've always said it emma-lin...

Mammyloveswine · 26/10/2021 16:29

I love it!!

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/10/2021 16:29

I'd pronounce it Emma-line

It's not a bad name but I prefer Emma.

SelfIdentifiedRightsHoarder · 26/10/2021 16:28

I would pronounce it as Emma-Lin or Emma-Line

GailTheFish · 26/10/2021 16:02

I love it, was our choice for a girl but ended up with two boys - going to get 2 girl guinea pigs at some point and call them Emmeline and Millicent instead!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2021 15:55

Lovely name - elegant, not overused yet "fits in" with her peers. Just be aware it may be very gradually getting more popular as people are more openly feminist or also look for "Victorian"/vintage names or soundalikes to popular Emily, Emma and Evelyn.

I think the majority of people in the UK would pronounce it as "Em -meh -leen/Emma- leen" like Mrs Pankhurst. I 'm guessing the "Emma -line" pronunciation might be slightly more popular in the US like "Mad- -eh -line" vs "Mad- eh -lyn".

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 26/10/2021 13:43

Gorgeous name, pronounced Emma-line.

RuthW · 26/10/2021 09:23

Lovely. Only ever heard it as Emma-line though.

Feilin · 26/10/2021 09:05

Ill be the only naysayer so far. I am an Emmeline (pronounced Emm-e-leen) and for 41 yrs Ive constantly been called things like Emily Emma Evelyn Avaline etc. Frankly its a pain . Rarely does it get spelled correctly never mind pronounced or even called my actual name. My difficulties however are unlikely to be yours as the name is increasingly popular these days.

SummaLuvin · 26/10/2021 08:54

I like it alot.

My instinct would be to pronounce Eh-mer-leen (how it is said on Harry Potter audiobooks and never met one in real life)

TheSpiral · 26/10/2021 08:54

@WarmthAndDepth

Emmeline is a lovely name with positive associations. But I don't see why it would be pronounced Emma-leen? Em-meh-leen, surely, like Emmeline Pankhurst.
Emma-leen and Em meh leen are practically the same in my accent, I’ve been sitting here mouthing them quietly to myself! I would pronounce Emily Emma-Lee for example.
SadWife2020 · 26/10/2021 08:49

Beautiful, Emmie is great too and the suffragette connection is wonderful too. Girl power!

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 26/10/2021 07:43

I would also say Emma-Lynn but it's a beautiful name, you should go for it!

I also know an adeline (Adda-lynn) which is also lovely. (Nn Addy)
