I think I posted about this before, but I’m nearly 36 weeks and we still have no names, so MN to the rescue! So to set the scene, I’m white brit and dh is brit pakistani. V large extended family on dh side means all the names id choose from the big book of Muslim baby names are gone (Zachariah, Haris, shoaib, kamran, Adam, Ali, layth, zayan, Ismail, ayan etc)

People keep on crapping on the names we / I do like. None of DH know we’re having a boy but they’ve crapped on them in passing. They are also hypercritical because of my heritage (we’ll leave that one there and not touch it because it’s a whole other thread)

My family are also quite Britain first in their mentality (again whole other thread) Neither mental side’s feeling will be strictly paid attention too but tbh I can do without the grief we got for DDs name on both sides, it was f’ing relentless.

So so far we like kinda but not properly.::

Aiden or aydin

Deen but spelt Dean

Asher

Rayan- my family would def have a problem with this name but aside from that it’s v v popular- I know about 4/5 people with a son called rayan so it dulls it a little for me.

It’s this or succumb to the footballer names DH keeps on suggesting

I think Sufyan is lovely. Or:

Nour
Nihal

pinkgin85 · 24/10/2021 09:40

My son Aydin, his name is technically pronounced "Aye-din" but for school and general purposes we just pronounce it as "Aiden"

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 24/10/2021 09:38

My friend who had similar issues called her DS Sami and that appeared acceptable to all.

Lockdownbear · 24/10/2021 09:36

Aiden I wouldn't have thought was Muslim.
Danyl I'd have thought was someone trying a "unique" spelling of Daniel.

Your baby go with what you like.

afinethingindeed · 24/10/2021 09:34

I like Laith and Haitham/Haytham

KittenKong · 24/10/2021 09:26

What about family or classical names (from your or your husbands background)? That’s what our family have done.

Greyeverywhere · 24/10/2021 09:19

What about spelling Asher as Ashar which is how most Muslims I know spell it? Would that make it different enough for your in laws?
I also know a few Muslims who have named their son Noah rather than Nuh.
I have very very stubborn inlaws too when it comes to naming babies but I just stand my ground and do what I want as I'm the one who's going to be saying the child's name the most! They still whinge about it 12 years on but so what. My child is my child.

biglittleliar · 24/10/2021 09:19

What about Samuel which is koranic but also very ambiguous? Not sure it's very Pakistani though, more Arabic.

Or Ali? Super simple and could be short for anything...

Ramzi?

Ameanstreakamilewide · 24/10/2021 09:13

What names have you already vetoed?

Let's start there, because you obviously have a large extended family which precludes lots of names straight away.

Mamacita191 · 24/10/2021 08:50

Shaan?

FlowerArranger · 24/10/2021 08:42

Towfik
Ramsi

Sleeplessem · 24/10/2021 08:34
@Scirocco because she's picking the most English sounding names with very in-muslim sound and vetoing anything remotely Muslim sounding. And she's not Muslim as far as I can understand, her husband's family are
Excuse you! I am thank you very much- already said that I am

Then you haven't read all her posts..she has said that she is Muslim, and so having a Muslim name is important to her.

Carolinesyear · 24/10/2021 07:57

Un-muslim

faithfulbird20 · 24/10/2021 03:48

Umar or Omar
Harris
Musa
Nuh or Noah
Yahya

Scirocco · 24/10/2021 03:28

The poster has already said she's Muslim and wants a Muslim name for their child. Why are people questioning that? It's perfectly normal to want to give a child a name that has a connection with the faith and/or culture in which they'll be brought up.

GreenLunchBox · 24/10/2021 01:14

@PearDropKid

Do you actually want to call him a Muslim name? I mean YOU, personally - or are you just going along with what you feel is expected of you?
This.

It's your child, after all

Nivealove · 24/10/2021 01:10

Ibrahim

Yusef
