Muslim boy names- help me please

I think I posted about this before, but I’m nearly 36 weeks and we still have no names, so MN to the rescue! So to set the scene, I’m white brit and dh is brit pakistani. V large extended family on dh side means all the names id choose from the big book of Muslim baby names are gone (Zachariah, Haris, shoaib, kamran, Adam, Ali, layth, zayan, Ismail, ayan etc)

People keep on crapping on the names we / I do like. None of DH know we’re having a boy but they’ve crapped on them in passing. They are also hypercritical because of my heritage (we’ll leave that one there and not touch it because it’s a whole other thread)

My family are also quite Britain first in their mentality (again whole other thread) Neither mental side’s feeling will be strictly paid attention too but tbh I can do without the grief we got for DDs name on both sides, it was f’ing relentless.

So so far we like kinda but not properly.::

Aiden or aydin

Deen but spelt Dean

Asher

Rayan- my family would def have a problem with this name but aside from that it’s v v popular- I know about 4/5 people with a son called rayan so it dulls it a little for me.

It’s this or succumb to the footballer names DH keeps on suggesting

@SleepingStandingUp

So his family don't like you because your white and your family don't like him because he isn't? I wouldn't be worried about their opinions frankly.
Bingo!

I’m not arsed about their actual opinion, they can go suck an egg for all I’m concerned. His family would have a negative thing to say even if I called the baby Abdullah or Abdurrahman.

My reason behind wanting a more neutral sounding Muslim name is a) discrimination (sucks but it’s happens) b) guess I generally prefer the sound of most of them, is that bad I don’t know c) the constant correcting people on how to pronounce DDs name and then the sneers and funny comments isn’t great- so would like to avoid again. (Dd actually has a v simple name too, 3/4 letters depending on how you spell it)

My advice would be to NOT discuss the name with relatives or inlaws at all. Someone will always have something to say. Shortlist the names you like and when baby arrives name him and you and DH let everyone know together.

Does it really matter if someone in the extended family has the same name?

For me the most ambiguous or western suited names for a boy would be

Adam
Atif
Asher (is a known pakistani name.)
Ali
Ayan
Aris
Burak
Elias (Ilyas)
Emir (Amir)
Esa
Emin (Amin/Ameen)
Emre
Sami
Shaan
Hani
Haris
Hassan
Maaz
Lutfi
Rami
Talal

Zachariah (zakariya)

Zaki which is a name in its own right. Could be shortened to Zak by your side if the family.

Zayn
Zayd
Ziyad
Yunes
Murad

I agree with your husband about Ramzi and kitchen nightmares, sorry!

MsDidoTwite · 24/10/2021 19:56

Names not Mars! Ultimately, it’s your child so you get to choose his name.

MsDidoTwite · 24/10/2021 19:55

Does it have to be a specifically Muslim name? I mean, if the extended family is veto-img the names you like and you’re struggling to find something suitably Muslim. then just widen the scope. There’s plenty of perfectly good boys Mars out there!

cafedesreves · 24/10/2021 19:42

And def not chavvy at all!

cafedesreves · 24/10/2021 19:41

Sami is wonderful

LittleBearPad · 24/10/2021 19:41

Sami is also lovely.

I actually REALLY like Sami

Great suggestion

maddy68 · 24/10/2021 18:18

Karim?

StColumbofNavron · 24/10/2021 18:15

I don’t think Sami is chavvy (but I would say that)! I don’t know anyone called Sami or Sammy either Muslim or English or otherwise so whilst it’s recognisable there aren’t actually loads of them.

HironsBirons · 24/10/2021 18:12

Salman
Yahya
Reza

Sleeplessem · 24/10/2021 17:10

One of the names Thats come up loads is DHs name lol, id mention it but it’s super outing lol.

Someone suggested ramzi/ ramsi I love that, it means sign i looked it up, it’s got the same sort of meaning as Dds name… DH hates it though said his middle name should be ‘kitchen nightmares’ - man thinks he’s funny

Same with rafi and raif which I also quite liked.

I like Sami too it’s cute- do we think it could come off as a bit chavvy though? Same with Dean.

Someone mentioned spelling Asher Ashar which is the more traditional Muslim way, not sure if I like that spelling.

The reason I want something fairly on the English tongue is because the amount of strange looks, scoffs, constant mispronounciation and even rude comments about DDs name - even though it’s quite an easy name to say in all honestly, only 3/4 letters depending on how you spell it. Whilst people should learn not to be so rude/ ignorant yes, it’s still quite hurtful to be told. So keen to avoid that again. (Her name is the arabic name for sign/ miracle for anyone curious, again super outing lol)

Baby boy will have an English middle name after my late DF.

We’ve added Zayd to the list too xx

StColumbofNavron · 24/10/2021 11:11

Sami is a very good compromise. We are both Muslim with different heritage and an English grandparent who struggles with pronunciation and whilst I would never have envisaged having a son called Sami it suits him and is just very easy.

ZiggZagg · 24/10/2021 11:07

Kamran pronounced like Cameron

saraclara · 24/10/2021 10:26

I like Aydin.

There have been several Aidens in my life and I've never known any of them to be teased about their name, nor would it have occuurred to me that there was any reason to be.
