Thibault

I am part French but live in the UK, as will our child. Does this name work in English (pronounced tee bow)? I guess a nn would probably be Thib or Bo or something, though we would let that naturally evolve.

The main alternative currently is Felix, though I have a real soft spot for Ludovic.

Please help!!

Nooooo

JingleCatJingle · 30/10/2021 00:51

hollow laugh

People do not remember.
Pick something relatively straightforward, please.

Blubells · 27/10/2021 13:49

The English will mess it up and your child will have an aggravating existence.

Please don't let this narrow minded view put you off an interesting and beautiful name.

Thibault is so easy to pronounce (Tee bo) and you really only need to be told once!

The world is indeed full of beautiful names - let's be a bit more open minded.

Go for Felix.
Sorry English people, but I am right.

'Aggravating existence'🙄

The world is full of names we don't know how to pronounce yet. Please don't let small mindedness stop you choosing a name you love.

We'd all still be called Anne and John if we all thought like that.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/10/2021 09:53

Oh and Felix sounds like a pet dog or cat.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/10/2021 09:53

I disagree - most of the time we are told someone's name when we first meet them so people will hear how to say the name although they may not know how to spell it. Hyperbole to say the child will have an aggravating existence!

Mouk · 27/10/2021 08:59

It's a lovely name. Oops, I've been pronouncing it wrong all along!

Blubells · 26/10/2021 09:09

Or just call him Theo

Thibault (Tee-bo) is soo much more interesting and more memorable than Theo, of which there are thousands already.

VanilleAunGateau · 25/10/2021 15:59

Thibault de Montalembert sighs

underneaththeash · 25/10/2021 15:41

It depends if him being called Thy-bolt would annoy you.
Personally, I would choose something easier. (Or just call him Theo.

Movinghouseatlast · 25/10/2021 15:38

I worked with a Thibault, it's a great name. His nickname behind his back was Tybalt though.

KeflavikAirport · 25/10/2021 15:35

Yes, but I disagree. It peaked in the nineties when it was quite popular and has been on the slide since.

WeAreTheHeroes · 25/10/2021 14:31

@midsomermurderess - yes, I remember now you've said.

He could go with Theo for short here in the UK OP.

TatianaBis · 25/10/2021 13:46

@KeflavikAirport

Well, the OP did ask how it was seen in France. Well behind the curve is the answer.
Another answer as given by two other posters including myself is that it’s a classic and not common enough to date.

Elisemum · 25/10/2021 12:32

It’s a very nice name, but nobody will ever pronounce it correctly I’m afraid. I have a friend who’s daughter is called Anais (they are not french), it’s a lovely name but no one, absolutely no one knows how to pronounce it so all family and friends call her “the baby”:) sometimes it’s a little awkward when you see aunties and others struggling, so it’s just something you will have to deal with if you are prepared.

ChristieMalry · 25/10/2021 12:31

It's a good name and you should go for it if you like it. As a pp said, most folks only mispronounce a name once and it doesn't happen often anyway because usually people are introduced to each other by another person who usually pronounces a name correctly.

TatianaBis · 25/10/2021 12:28

It’s never been widely used enough in France for it to date.

Who would want an ‘of the moment’ name - those are the ones that date the most.

averythinline · 25/10/2021 12:27

I really like it but again would had pronounced wrong - also like Felix but love Ludovic - and also Ludo as a nn goes well with the theos/lucas/milos that are all DS nicest friends :) but has a good gravitas if you want to stick to the full name

KeflavikAirport · 25/10/2021 12:23

definitely falling out of fashion in France: www.magicmaman.com/prenom/thibault,2006200,15905.asp#:~:text=Le%20total%20des%20gar%C3%A7ons%20portant,donn%C3%A9%20%C3%A0%202%20316%20gar%C3%A7ons.&text=En%202016%2C%20694%20b%C3%A9b%C3%A9s%20se,compte%20483%20b%C3%A9b%C3%A9s%20nomm%C3%A9s%20ainsi.

KeflavikAirport · 25/10/2021 12:19

It's not very of the moment in French, is it? It's a bit 90s.

midsomermurderess · 25/10/2021 09:22
@midsomermurderess - I think you are thinking of the character Tintin in Spiral? I can't recall a Titi.

I think it's a great name OP and people will learn how to pronounce it before they learn to spell it. There are plenty of more commonplace names lots of people struggle to spell so I wouldn't let that put me off.
No, not Tintin, Titi, a character in series 8. The psycho son of Cisco who Gilou met in prison, they conspire to rob the drug traffickers. He murders

Souleymane. We learn at some point that he is formally called Thibauld. The actor looks a bit like Kris Marshall.

onelittlefrog · 25/10/2021 08:56

I would have pronounced it Ti-bolt and I think a lot of people in the UK will struggle with the pronunciation.

It's a nice name though :)

DFOD · 25/10/2021 08:34

Stunning name - it’s an opportunity for others to learn something about him - will also make him v memorable. I am glad that I learned this name a pronunciation today and the insight around the connection with Theobald and Theobalds Rd. it’s a v easy name to remember and pronounce once told.
