Ralph

I was really shocked that Ralph was down 14 places and is at 95 on the ONS chart. I thought it was really popular. I love Ralph but I was put off by popularity but it seems to not be the case? How many do you know?

I have a Ralph he is 3months, we only thought of it 10 mins before he arrived, but it suits him so much, I love it, he gets Ralphie somtimes.
I feel it goes with his brother Bertie, tho both are are popular doggie names so may get more than my boys come to me at the park, I don't know any others.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/10/2021 23:00

I know 3 primary aged Ralph’s. And a primary aged Rafe.

Thedogscollar · 25/10/2021 22:53

@Darceyhemingway
I know the cutest little toddler called Ralph.
I would never think of vomit or penis when I see him.
It's a perfectly lovely name.
Some people on here are unbelievably rude and would never say to your face what they put down here.

RandomDent · 25/10/2021 16:56

The Muppets dog is Rowlf.

Judy Blume rocks!

PoleFairy · 25/10/2021 16:52

I was also shocked @Darceyhemingway there has been a long line of Ralph's in my family and I always had it top of my boys name list. Weve started ttc and tbh I dont like popular names and thought I'd have to forget about Ralph as it jumped from 99 to 89 to 70-something the last few years and I assumed it would be in the 50s now. Pleasantly surprised to see its moved up a bit again.

I dont personally know any young Ralph's but everytime I say it to someone they do reply "oh yes my friend/cousin/sister has just had a baby called Ralph" which puts my off. Also a fairly big youtuber/Instagramer has just called their baby Ralph (TheAnnaEdit) which puts me off a bit.

I still adore it though. It's got the vibes of Arthur, Archie and Alfie without being mega popular

Thank you everyone for their input xx

Go for it OP, its nice you don't hear it a lot and despite having read the Judy Blume books the association didn't come to mind. I doubt it will for his peers either.

TeddyBeans · 22/10/2021 19:46

Taught a Ralphie last year, he was a lovely, cheeky little thing

driftcompatible · 22/10/2021 19:42

Sorry but it has too many negative connotations in popular culture: vomit, penis, the stupid child from The Simpsons.

BasiliskStare · 22/10/2021 19:15

I love Guy - but was vetoed because "Guy the Gorilla " - if only I had not listened to SIL Grin - no normal person says Guy the Gorilla - lovely name .

Darceyhemingway · 22/10/2021 19:08

@apintofwine people can be so rude. I have to steel myself before checking the replies 😂 I love the name Gus sooooo much but my husband dosent. I also love Guy but again he said no!

I love Rafferty/Raff but again my husbands saying no! The only name he's suggested is Axel which I finally came round too then he said he didn't like it anymore 🙄🙄

I only know one. He's 70.

Ralph is great on a dog but awful on a child. It's a very unattractive name and it does make me think of vomiting.

Anoisagusaris · 22/10/2021 14:58

Yes, penis is the first thing I think of!

Apart from that, it’s still not a name I like.

apintofwine · 22/10/2021 14:57

Thank you @bloominglovelyorange :)

Not yet and due any day! Contenders are Hugo, Henry, Gabriel, Gus… but I imagine it won’t be any of the above!

bloominglovelyorange · 22/10/2021 14:52

It's a lovely name @apintofwine
Did you decide on a name for his brother x

apintofwine · 22/10/2021 14:33

I have a lovely toddler Ralph and I love it. Met a few Raffys and playgroup but no Ralphs. I wasn’t put off by any of the associations as I wasn’t really familiar with them.

People on here can be so mean - I posted asking for suggestions on what to call his little brother and people piped up with references to vomiting and it being awful. I didn’t ask for opinions on Ralph and yet people still felt entitled to be so rude about his name!

Kintsugi16 · 22/10/2021 13:59

Ralph, Rapha or Rafferty
All good

MrsToadflax · 22/10/2021 13:35

I really like Rafferty as an alternative Smile

Darceyhemingway · 22/10/2021 12:11

@Sgtmajormummy aw what a cute Ralph!

@ThirdElephant I agree with that I only hear rape too

Really shocked at the books at teens, im a big reader but not heard of her but annoyed she's ruined a good name for so many people!

@notacooldad yeah I'd consider Ralf esp in people are having difficulties with the pronunciations. I prefer the look of it too. Thanks

Yes I. Know a Ralph who's a teenager now. He was always called Ralphie as a baby.

emmathedilemma · 22/10/2021 12:04

1 in his mid 40's that i went to school with - a fat pompous child with a overly pushy mother. It's put me off the name for life!

RhubarbFairy · 22/10/2021 11:11

I know two. A 5 year old Ralph and a 7 year old Ralf.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/10/2021 11:07

My dog’s name! People say it suits him.

Ralph
Kintsugi16 · 22/10/2021 11:02

Love it

garlictwist · 22/10/2021 11:01

I also came on to say Judy Blume but I think that perhaps that association is only with people of a certain age (probably in their 30s an 40s) so maybe not a big issue
