Marsaili, testing waters

After endeavour having mixed responses, I’m curious about marsaili.

Bearing in mind I’m in Scotland. I went to school with a ciorstaidh, and she coped fine, so Gaelic names do not put me off.

You say it MAR sa lee.

I've never heard it before but I like it. I'm irish and love traditional Irish names but I am also finding Scottish names equally as beautiful.

hashbrownsandwich · 17/10/2021 09:58

@wombatsandadoor it's from Outlander. I like it!

I also like Merryn.

MyOtherProfile · 17/10/2021 09:58

It's ok, too close to masala for my liking, as someone said.

To be honest I'm more interested in knowing how you pronounce ciorstaidh.

HHSchultz · 17/10/2021 09:58

I'm Scottish and know two with the name, one is 30 and the other late 50's. just remembered I did know an old woman with the name, she would be in her 90's now. I like it, but is there more than one spelling?

hollygoflightly · 17/10/2021 09:55

I'm Welsh, never heard it before, guessed the right pronunciation and I think it's really pretty

Hexagosaurus · 17/10/2021 09:52

Went to school with a Marsali. Remember she was a good hockey player, don’t remember thinking the name was unusual
Was also in Scotland

Lovely and quite well known Scottish name

I'll have to hand in my Scottish passport. I'd never heard the name before until about a year or so ago.

WaltzingBetty · 17/10/2021 09:47

@MrsMoastyToasty

Too much like masala, as in the curry.
It's actually nothing like that if you pronounce it rather than just glance at the letters and make a random assumption Confused

Lovely and quite well known Scottish name - used in Outlander and the Peter May Lewis Trilogy so lots of exposure for non Scots

Ughmaybenot · 17/10/2021 09:46

Never heard of it before and would’ve pronounced it Mar Say Lee but it’s not exactly a tricky one to get your head around once you’re told.
I don’t love it generally but if you do, that’s what matters.

wombatsandadoor · 17/10/2021 09:43

I’ve never come across someone with the name before, I know it from a book,

I really dislike it.

DeireadhFomhair · 17/10/2021 09:42

Lovely name, you're in Scotland so I'm sure it's perfectly fine.
I know it from Outlander 😊

CovidCorvid · 17/10/2021 09:40

I'm English, never heard of it but guessed the pronunciation correctly if that's a concern. Pretty name

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/10/2021 09:40

Too much like masala, as in the curry.
