Is 'Monica' a classy name?

I really love it, and I like that it doesn't seem too common. Is it classy or just dated/boring?

I also like Monika (Polish variant?) too.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AfterSchoolWorry · 17/10/2021 17:06

It's frumpy.

FlowerArranger · 17/10/2021 17:06

@Enko

I like it. Its a pretty name
I agree. Who cares about Friends and Bill Clinton's POTS...

It has a lovely sound to it, it's slightly unusual without being way out, it probably won't date, and it can be shortened to Mona,

As in Mona Lisa Wink

FindingMeno · 17/10/2021 14:08

Or Monique?

adrianmolesmole · 17/10/2021 11:58

What about Danica as an alternative?

Actually a lovely name too, the only one I know of is Danica McKellar :)

@ThirdElephant

I liked it, but then found it literally meant name- like moniker- and it put me off.
It's named after a nun, Saint Monica. But I agree with @Atlas2021 that it's a strong and beautiful name. And international too! The Friends thing is obvious but that doesn't put me off, it's hardly a negative association, is it. There's also Monica Bellucci :) :)
Stevearnottsbeard · 17/10/2021 11:47

I know a 11 year old monica, she's a bully, really puts me off the name

Noluthando · 17/10/2021 07:31

Nah, I know two Monicas, one was on Friends and the other was a matron of a care home and not a pleasant woman.

elfran · 17/10/2021 07:26

I know an Italian Monica who is as classy as can be - but generally I'd say it doesn't have any real connotations in that sense, one way or another!

Agree that it's a great name that can go through life well. I think the nickname Mica/Mika gives it a fresh feeling too.

NoSquirrels · 17/10/2021 06:52

People habitually shorten it to Mon, which I find ugly. So I wouldn’t because of that.

HeronLanyon · 17/10/2021 06:37

Used to know a Donica ! Just remembered.

HeronLanyon · 17/10/2021 06:36

Uk here.
It’s not a name which is ‘classy’ in itself at all.
I’ve known one who was German (with a k) - lovely woman and has made me ‘not mind it’ as a name - feel very neutral about it. Very underused and dated.

Magicstars · 17/10/2021 06:21

It's ok, I prefer the polish spelling.

In the UK I would suggest it has as 'American' vibe, nothing wrong with that, but IMO if you want 'classy' then perhaps go classic. Charlotte, Eliza(Beth), Beatrice, Victoria, Anna etc.

Or a more Polish name- Anastasia, Eva, Veronica?

Notajogger · 17/10/2021 06:09

Just makes me think of Friends. Feels a bit dated.

AnkleDeep · 17/10/2021 06:06

Not classy but cute.

BikeRunSki · 17/10/2021 06:04

@ThiagoSilvasToe

Very dated. Just think Lewinsky.... Or Friends.
Me too
ThirdElephant · 17/10/2021 05:56

Anotherhill · 17/10/2021 05:56

I really like it.

Porridgeislife · 17/10/2021 05:50

I think the name Monica has spent a bit too much in the public eye to be considered classy, but it’s a lovely name. What about Danica as an alternative?

Ginandplatonic · 17/10/2021 05:08

I quite like it and would find a baby Monica refreshing. I don’t think it was ever common enough to have any particular connotation, whether “dated”, “classy”/“not classy” or whatever.

Seafog · 17/10/2021 05:02

On par with Jenna, Kelly and Cindy

PlainJane1000 · 17/10/2021 04:53

I think it's a name that works well on a child a teen and an adult, I think it's well known without being common and it's a refreshing change from all the old lady names. I don't think in the UK it was ever crazy popular so it's not dated in that regard. I wouldnt use the term classy for it but as pp said class doesn't come from a name. It gets my vote.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/10/2021 04:38

Not at all.

Auroreforet · 17/10/2021 04:12

I knew one Monica.
She wasn't classy.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 17/10/2021 04:04

No. Never.
