Endeavour?

This is my dream name for a boy, don’t worry I’m like 3-5 years off having children, so not going to saddle a child with it anytime soon and maybe not at all.

Yes I am an Inspector Morse fan.

My step mum is a fan of endeavour so maybe I’m being encouraged lol.

You're naming a child, not a ship

Thesearmsofmine · 19/10/2021 15:21

I like the sound of it as a middle name, I wouldn’t use it as a first name.

Maireas · 19/10/2021 15:17

I think it's a great name!
A change from Teddy.

alpinerain · 19/10/2021 14:00

It's definitely out there and different but honestly not bad. Could always use it as a middle name.

WhatsNewPussycatWoOhOhOhOhOhO · 19/10/2021 03:11

Was on my list for a second boy. I liked Emerance for a girl.

Mn is not the place to ask about names that are not top 100. But I'd rather hear of an Endeavour than anything that makes the top 100.

Orphlids · 19/10/2021 00:19

I’m a huge Morse fan, but I could never quite convince myself that I liked his name. Endeavour just doesn’t feel like a name to me. But I would absolutely use it as a middle name! Middle names are seldom used, so I like the idea of them being a bit bonkers, or somehow related to the parents’ passions. My daughter is named after the heroine from one of Morse’s favourite operas (I didn’t mention the Morse connection to DP, who, inexplicably, is not a fan). I think I’d like a small society of people who have children with Morse inspired names, and we can all nod at each other in mutual understanding. I once dreamt I had a baby boy and named him Beaumont, like the (only fictional) Oxford college referred to in Morse.

Ellmau · 18/10/2021 23:15

It's quite a ... brave choice.

It would be tricky for a small child to learn to spell.

TuftyMarmoset · 18/10/2021 18:56

Absolutely not as a first name. As a middle name maybe... preferably second middle name.

ClinkeyMonkey · 18/10/2021 07:40

I'm a Morse fan too, but wouldn't inflict this name on a child. Even Morse himself didn't seem terribly keen on it, considering he kept it hidden from everyone!

Chachachawoo · 18/10/2021 07:30

I think it's cool and could be used for boy or girl. But wouldn't be brave enough. It's quite a statement name. I would probably use it as a middle name and find a safer first name

Kione · 17/10/2021 18:56
@Kione I was thinking Endy :D lol
Yeah, sounds better I admit

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/10/2021 22:53

Nice sound and we need more "virtue"/word boys names - but quite brave imo. If he's confident/outgoing he'll love it (what a conversation starter!), but if not, he'll be insisting on "Ed" once he's old enough or "Dev" as pp suggested is kind of cool too...

Maybe compromise and use it as a middle name?

CelebrateAndDream · 16/10/2021 21:33

Dev for short 🤷‍♀️. But really, it's a bit of a mouthful...and for a 4 year old to learn to spell in Reception, I think the poor chap would spend quite a long time sobbing at the writing table 😞

Nooo. It's awful.

pictish · 16/10/2021 20:18

Hmm…I like unusual names and I am pretty open minded about them. This one’s a no for me, strangely. It’s too whimsical I think.

TyrannosaurusRights · 16/10/2021 20:13

I like it. Really, for his peers it will just be his name.

wombatsandaplant · 16/10/2021 19:58

Every reasonable comment I’m like, yeah can’t name him that. But then every comment that likes it I’m like, ooh yes.

Maybe I should just stick to a good Scottish name. But then I get all excited when I think about Endeavour. I’ve got a few years to mull this over, we were just talking about it today so I got all excited.

Or Enda for short, perfectly good Irish boy’s name!

Endeavour makes me think of some of the rarer or perhaps more old fashioned “virtue” or “quality” names used in Nigeria and some other African countries: Blessing, Innocence, Goodluck, Hosanna, Progress, etc.

Probably heresy here, but I wonder if the US spelling would work better as a personal name (Endeavor), similar to how even in the UK the girls’ name Honor is more often spelled without the u.

Synchrony · 16/10/2021 19:53

I think it's cool!

MindyStClaire · 16/10/2021 19:53

I think a good rule in general is that if you have to ask "could we get away with..." about a baby name then stay clear as there's every chance your child won't thank you when they're older.

There's a common Irish man's name Enda.

DotDotDotDotDot · 16/10/2021 19:46

Sorry it’s a no from me. A good meaning but I don’t think it’s very wearable for a person.

AliceinBorderland · 16/10/2021 19:39

Why not!

Ed for short.

It is much better than the silly Teddy trend at the moment.

romdowa · 16/10/2021 19:38

Sorry but it's awful

HeronLanyon · 16/10/2021 19:37

James Cook’s Endeavour (Australia/n Zealand) not Scott of the Antarctic ffs !!
