Hello mumnetters,
I would like to know your thoughts on Matthew?
We both like it and think it will age well . It doesn't seem very popular at the moment where we live. Also any suggestions for middle names.
Thank you in advance.

It will always get my vote too

I think it's a lovely name. It means "gift." With a two syllable surname & first name I'd go for a two syllable middle name, eg Daniel, Edward, David etc.

CaptainCallisto · 14/10/2021 18:03

I have an 8yo Matthew. He is the only one in his year, though there's another in Y6 at our school. It's a timeless classic!

Downton57 · 14/10/2021 17:34

The term dated is a bit meaningless here. Matthew is an ancient, Biblical name. It's lovely.

gogohm · 14/10/2021 17:33

It's timeless, can be abbreviated (Matt) made cute (Matty). (Ok bias as it was our chosen name but we had girls)

someofusdontknowwhy · 14/10/2021 17:32

I love Matt and Matty, the names sound warm and friendly

weegiemum · 14/10/2021 17:31

Matthew was our choice if dd1 had been a boy. We then found something we liked just a little better and used it for ds. Then we were going to use Matthew again if dd2 had been a boy.

First time was going to be Matthew Paul, then used Paul for ds's middle name. Second time would have been Matthew Brendan.

Great name, suits any age or situation. I know a few, youngest is 4, oldest is 50's.

SummerInSun · 14/10/2021 17:28

Great name (of my DS1!). Everyone knows the name, but there hasn't been any others in his nursery or his year at school. Can be Matty when you want a cute baby nickname, then Matt when/if he wants a more adult nickname.

Only downside for us is that Matthew was my favourite boy's name, but when DS 2 came along I told my DH he couldn't go with his favourite boy's name of Mark, as I didn't want a lifetime of jokes about when we would be having Luke and John. 😂

I think it might be coming back into fashion. I've recently met a toddler and a baby Matthew and now this thread. Coincidence possibly or maybe not!

Kanaloa · 14/10/2021 17:22

It’s a lovely name. Any middle name would sound nice with it really. I don’t agree that it’s dated, not in the same way a name like Steven or Gemma is dated, because it’s never been as popular as them. Although I quite like dated names anyway so I’m not the best judge!

IsThePopeCatholic · 14/10/2021 17:19

Love it - but then it’s my son’s name!

3peassuit · 14/10/2021 17:13

Matthew James
Matthew Phillip
Matthew Christopher
Matthew David
Matthew Evan
Matthew Francis

DowntonCrabby · 14/10/2021 17:12

I love it.

3peassuit · 14/10/2021 17:11

It’s a timeless classic. Love it.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 14/10/2021 17:10

Sorry @toastofthetown I did read your post wrong there.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 14/10/2021 17:09

@toastofthetown

In England and Wales Matthew has been declining in popularity and will probably fall out of the top hundred in the 2020 data. It’s a bit dated from about thirty years ago, but it will age well, and he probably won’t share a class with another one. Personally I think it’s a bit dull, but it’s a solid name.

I think most middle names would work with Matthew. I’d be tempted to go for something a bit more out there but I appreciate maybe a bit polarising.
Matthew Aloysius
Matthew Casimir
Matthew Jago
Matthew Lysander
Matthew Octavian

What are these middle names. They're all weird! I don't agree with it being outdated and why would you want half the class with the same name anyway?
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/10/2021 17:06

Love it. Love Matt as well.

jollyhollyday · 14/10/2021 17:05

I also have a teen Matthew - didn't share his name in primary school but maybe there is only one other in his secondary. Lovely solid name and his hasn't been shortened either.
I agree it sits well with short middle names and mine son's has been mentioned already. Not one of those crazy names mentioned though Wink

Lmes · 14/10/2021 16:58

I have a Matthew aged 19, he was the only Matthew in his class all through school. His middle name is Dylan and we have a Mc surname. I love the name so much . It suits him .

KirstenBlest · 14/10/2021 16:52

I like it and Matt.
Some will say it as Maffew though.

emmathedilemma · 14/10/2021 16:52

Great name, i know a couple of young ones (tweens and teens) and it's always suited them.

Chakraleaf · 14/10/2021 16:36

I have a 18yr old Matthew. Love it

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 14/10/2021 16:35

Love it, my teen is called Matthew and has never had it shortened. It suits him. I’ve never met a Matthew who was anything other than a kind, decent person which influenced my decision.

toastofthetown · 14/10/2021 16:34

@myheartskippedabeat All those names are names I like, taken from my name list. I don’t think they are ridiculous. The OP asked for middle name suggestions so I thought she might want something with a bit more imagination than the standard middle names.

lollipoprainbow · 14/10/2021 16:24
