Hello mumnetters,
I would like to know your thoughts on Matthew?
We both like it and think it will age well . It doesn't seem very popular at the moment where we live. Also any suggestions for middle names.
Thank you in advance.

I think it's a lovely name.

Whitecushion · 17/10/2021 15:56

I have one too. Lovely name. Matthew to us and Matt to his friends.

AliceinBorderland · 16/10/2021 17:30

Matthew is lovely

It will inevitably be shortened to Matt though. So how about Mark?

Mark / Matt...not much in it.

Mark cannot be shortened and he will always be called by his name accordingly.

Both traditional Saint names. Lovely

My favourite cousin's name. His middle name is Peter.

mamaduckbone · 14/10/2021 21:37

Love it - very classic and has a lovely soft sound. Also not overly common now although it was when I was growing up. I know an 11yo known as Matty - I'm sure it will be Matt when he hits teenage years.

I have a Matthew Paul of course we love it, it’s never shortened either,he’s my first born and he’s a gorgeous 42 year old.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2021 21:01

Love it

marypoppinsreturns · 14/10/2021 20:59

I love it and would have used it as a first name if I could. My ds is adopted so couldn't but it is his middle name.

Wtf86 · 14/10/2021 20:52

I love it.

I have an 11 year old Matthew John.

There is 1 other in his year 7 group of 106 but in primary he was the only one tight through the school.

Most of his friends call him Matt & he now refers to himself as Matt. He will always be Matthew to me I think!

A good choice - I might be biased tho lol.

Floralnomad · 14/10/2021 20:46

Love it , our Matthew ( Matt ) is now late 20s .

Blindleadingtheblind · 14/10/2021 20:44

Also nice to see a sensible name suggestion in the Baby Name threads for a change.

Blindleadingtheblind · 14/10/2021 20:43

I wanted this name for DS2 but his dad didn't like it. Would have loved a Matthew. Go for it OP.

Elisemum · 14/10/2021 20:40

Love it and love Matt for a teenager. It’s my newborn sons middle name. It will never go out of “fashion”

PricklesTheHedgehog · 14/10/2021 20:33

Love it

latte101 · 14/10/2021 20:21

It's a lovely name.

twilightcafe · 14/10/2021 20:20

Matthew is a fine, classic name that will see your DS through to adulthood.

Littlebelina · 14/10/2021 20:08

Love it. It would have been dd's name if she had been a boy

ClinkeyMonkey · 14/10/2021 20:04

It's a good, solid classic. I think it's lovely.

VanillaAndOrange · 14/10/2021 18:48

Lovely, one of my favourites.

I feel like I've known a lot of Matthew Jameses and Matthew Williams, which could be taken two ways - either they are nice, timeless combinations and worth considering, or something to avoid because it's been done before.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/10/2021 18:32

Matthew is a fabulous name. A definite timeless classic.

I like Matthew Dylan (as mentioned before).

@Downton57

The term dated is a bit meaningless here. Matthew is an ancient, Biblical name. It's lovely.
The term dated isn’t meaningless. Dating is related to recent name trends, rather than how old a name is. Names which become very popular, that fall from popularity become dated. Because you hear the name and have an assumption on how old the bearer is. If I met a father in his thirties, with a preschooler and their names were Matthew and Noah, I would assume Matthew was the dad and Noah the son. Both are old, Biblical names, but Matthew peaked in popularity in the 90s, and Noah is peaking now.

Matthew was in the top 5 in the 90s and is now falling out of the top hundred. It’s not name like James or Edward which have been consistently popular for over a hundred years.

None of that is to say that Matthew is a bad name or should be avoided. The fact it’s less popular for babies is a good thing, as he’s less likely to share a class with someone of the same name. And I think, unless you choose a very classic name like William, most names will sound dated to some extent. It’s just a fact about the name that the OP might care about.
