Would you say Tah-lee-uh or tar-lee-uh?

OP posts:

Taaa- lee- ah

LizzieAnt · 06/10/2021 23:53

People with other accents do sound the r and so for them tar does not sound like ta or rhyme with la.

It's not just the 'r' that's the issue though RichardMarxisInnocent. The 'a' sound is different too. So I think the way I pronounce ta is different to the way you say ta. For me it rhymes with la as in Lala (the teletubby), not the note.

BubbleCoffee · 06/10/2021 23:39

Some of you need to leave your home village once in a while.

Or home city North London or the Home Counties...

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/10/2021 23:01

@BluebellsareBlue

Where is the R coming from????? It's tah Lee ah. Wtf is going on with people adding an R????
Nobody as adding an actual sounded r , they are trying to type it as they would say it in their accent. So to them (and me) the word tar, as in the black stuff which you put on roads, is pronounced the same as ta, as in the shortened slang form of thank you. As a PP said it rhymes with la the way Julie Andrews sang it in The Sound of Music. We don't sound the r at the end of tar. When we write Tar-lee-a we do not intend for the r to be sounded.

People with other accents do sound the r and so for them tar does not sound like ta or rhyme with la.

@GemLooper I would say Tah leah (emphasis on Tah, sounds like ta/thanks)

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

Bali and barley sound exactly the same in certain accents.

Some of you need to leave your home village once in a while. There are different accents lurking beyond them there hills.

They don’t even need to leave their villages. Just turn on the TV or watch some YouTube. Accents from all over the place. I’m really stunned that so many people cant think of an accent where these words sound different to how they say it.
RebeccaCloud9 · 06/10/2021 22:31

Wish we had a voice note option so I could hear all the lovely different accents saying these things, it's fascinating! Grin

RebeccaCloud9 · 06/10/2021 22:31

@Flickeringgreenlight in my accent, they ALL have the same a/ar/ah sound. Midlands.

(Barney, barn, Bali, far, car, amen, father. All the same)

HeronLanyon · 06/10/2021 22:29

@Smellsliketeenwhiskey

It’s my name.

It’s Tally-ah.

Tally Ho !

I’ve never heard Tally - ah but I like it.

SionnachRua · 06/10/2021 22:26

Side note: had actually never heard of Susannah or Trevor before (is this an example of SE England assuming everyone knows their public figures?). Enjoying a YouTube upload of a Trevor doc very much right now.

He absolutely, unquestionably, 100% has an accent and I'm sure all these lads in prison he's interviewing would agree.

PieMistee · 06/10/2021 22:25

Am I the only one sitting here saying "Bali" and "Barley" to myself, and still unable to hear any difference

No they are exactly the same!

MrsRobbieHart · 06/10/2021 22:25

@HeronLanyon

robbie 😂 yes but it is better spelled (spelt!?) Taow sometimes.
😂
PieMistee · 06/10/2021 22:24

Ta Lee ha for my friend from school

HeronLanyon · 06/10/2021 22:24

MarineBlue33 · 06/10/2021 22:22

Def Tar Lee Uh. Know a few. But it goes whichever way the name bearer prefers it.

MrsRobbieHart · 06/10/2021 22:22

I’m still cackling at “raw form” as if SE England is where the words originated from Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/10/2021 22:22

I know someone who pronounces her name as "Tar-lee-ya" with an emphasis on the first syllable. Her name is spelled Thalia though.

JassyRadlett · 06/10/2021 22:21

You don't say Baa - n or Baaa - ni.

I do!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/10/2021 22:20

Take Trevor McDonald. What accent does he have? Or Susanna Reid. I see them as no accent.

Oh come on. If Trev or Suse went to Louisiana or to Sydney do you think the locals might perceive them as having an accent?

It's such a strange thing where some people from the SE England think it's only everyone else who has an accent.

Smellsliketeenwhiskey · 06/10/2021 22:20

It’s my name.

It’s Tally-ah.

Flickeringgreenlight · 06/10/2021 22:16

For the people confused at Barley and Bali -

Barley should be (or so I though!!) pronounced like Barn - or Barney. So you still say the "r", just softly. You don't say Baa - n or Baaa - ni.

So Tar-lee-ahh sounds odd AF

MrsRobbieHart · 06/10/2021 22:16

Tal- what you dry your hands on Wink

SionnachRua · 06/10/2021 22:13

Tal to rhyme with shall, tall to rhyme with small...

So we could differentiate them as tal-ee-ah and tall-ee-ah? I can hear the difference in those immediately whereas some of the earlier, apparently obvious examples baffle me Grin

God, these threads always suck me in.
