Impossible surname

Our surname is Coe.
We’re having a boy in a few weeks and I can’t find a single name I like at all. Everything sounds like a company name!

Nothing with an O sound seems to work. Nor does anything ending in a C or K. Most boys’ names are one syllable and sound ridiculous.

I can see why Sebastian Coe’s mum went for that! It actually sounds alright. It would be on my list if it weren’t for him being well known.

Please help!

DH likes Edward and Isaac but I don’t love either and don’t think Isaac works at all.

I like Theo, Luke and Gabriel but DH doesn’t like them or they don’t work.

Well, I like
Jasper Coe
Charlie Coe

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 04/10/2021 20:42

Re Theodore - you could have Teddy instead of Theo? Teddy Coe sounds great!

stillcrazyafterall · 04/10/2021 20:42

Simeon?

hopesndreams210310 · 04/10/2021 20:35

Stefan Coe works! (Steph-an)

ChilliChaos · 04/10/2021 20:34

I also think some of the surname-as-first names go really well

Carter
Fletcher
Fraser
Hunter
Ryder
Cooper

ChilliChaos · 04/10/2021 20:31

Asher/Ashley Coe
Oliver Coe
Barnaby Coe
Andrew Coe

NigellaSeed · 04/10/2021 20:21

Oo I like pp suggestions of Elliot Coe and Nathan Coe too (and Sebastian obvs - still ringing that bell) Grin

itsraininghere · 04/10/2021 20:20

Xavier Coe is my favourite

Also Rueben
Jasper
Elliot
Jeremy
Joshua
Oliver
Tobias
Fabian
Magnus
Linus

Frazzledd · 04/10/2021 20:20

@Babyfg

I think Luke coe sounds really nice.
It would sound like 'Luco'? Difficult with one syllable surnames, but I really like some of @DaisyWaldron suggestions (not 'Will' as the pp said Grin )

Gabriel & Edward are lovely though!

Darceyhemingway · 04/10/2021 20:13

Actually the More I say it luke Coe all blends into one word. What a shame because it's lovely.
Longer names would work best I think

Elephantscantfly · 04/10/2021 20:13

Based on another thread I’ve just seen what about Douglas Coe?

Darceyhemingway · 04/10/2021 20:12

Luke and Gabriel go! Isaac deff dosent go. I've suddenly got a soft spot for the name luke it's lovley

LumpyandBumps · 04/10/2021 20:10

I like a lot of the names already suggested, just a few others came to mind.

Asa
Marcus
Jude
Noah
Zachary
Maxwell

Starlight39 · 04/10/2021 20:05

I love all the names on your shortlist especially Fraser - everyone knows how to pronounce it but I don't know any little Frasers. Also Rufus and Reuben are lovely. All unlikely to be shortened.

I also think Edward sounds good and Ed/Ted also both fine with Coe.

I'm slightly less keen on Charles/Charlie but only because there are 4 Charlies in my DS's year. He's year 5 though so may be less popular now.

I also like
Miles
Magnus
Matthias / Matthew
Jonas
David
Laurence
Alfred/Alfie

Happenchance · 04/10/2021 20:04

Ted Coe slightly better?! Ted Coe sounds too similar to Tesco.

Can anyone see issues with any of these? If Rufus gets shortened to Ruf (I don't know how likely that is) Ruf Coe sounds like a roofing company.

Isaiah Coe
Bastien Coe
Elias Coe
Leonard Coe

DuneFan · 04/10/2021 20:02

I agree Theo Coe sounds funny sorry. Too many o sounds.

Crisco is a sort of margarine (or something like that) in the US.

Your current list is really nice. May I also suggest you consider one syllable names which don't really abbreviate:
John
Paul
George
(There must be others but i seem to have Beatles on the brain)

mathanxiety · 04/10/2021 20:01

Ethan
Elliott
Fraser
Felix
Nathaniel
Asher
Matthew
Jared
Jethro
Alden
Austin

Blubells · 04/10/2021 19:56

I'd choose a name that doesn't get shortened to avoid the Will Coe, Joe Coe Ben Coe problem. Even Seb Coe isn't great imo.

I like

Reuben Coe
Quentin Coe
Tristan Coe

Seaview6 · 04/10/2021 19:55

I also liked Rowan but that sounds like Row & Co Grin

orangeautumnleaves · 04/10/2021 19:55

I think you need a longer name:

Matthew
Dominic
William
Joshua
Daniel

Just a few I think work with coe.

Seaview6 · 04/10/2021 19:54

To those saying Theodore (which I like) - doesn’t Theo Coe sound a bit weird? A bit of a tongue twister? That’s my concern.

OP posts:
GAW19 · 04/10/2021 19:52

Lucian was the first name that came to mind Smile

badg3r · 04/10/2021 19:51

Ooh I really like Theodore Coe, also it doesn't shorten to one syllable which is a bonus. I also like Arthur Coe.

Rainbowqueeen · 04/10/2021 19:51

I came on to say Reuben

I also think Ethan or Xavier would work well.
I’d use a 2 syllable name as it is less likely to be shortened than any of the longer names.

The best longer name I can think of is Alexander as it would be shortened to Alex which still sounds good

Seaview6 · 04/10/2021 19:50

I love Cornelius Coe but I’m concerned our DS wouldn’t once he’s a bit older! What an awesome name!
