Which do you think of as the 'normal' spelling? Husband and I don't agree!

Isobel

manhattenrain · 05/10/2021 12:59

Both are normal spellings. I prefer Isabel, but if I were to choose between Isobel and Isabelle, I'd choose Isabelle.Smile

@Frazzledd I think I've seen every boy name that exists on google/the kinder app now and I've just given up 🙈

@Lovethewinter

Thanks all. I'm not too worried if it's a popular name - I'm a teacher and have taught a couple of Izzys so know it's not uncommon! It's actually the nickname Izzy that draws me to it the most and I think it goes well with my daughter's name.

We don't actually know what we're having but we're screwed if it's a boy as we have nothing and I'm currently 11 days overdue 😱

Do you not know the sex yet?? Ahh OP start a thread on poss boys names too if you don't have anything in mind, just incase it's not an 'Izzy'?
Bells3032 · 05/10/2021 09:59

Prefer Isabelle (we are actually going for this name) but my family also have a lot French names in the family (despite having zero french connection).

I think Isabel is an usual spelling and she'll be correcting people all the time and get annoyed

Have an Isabella in our family but she been called Bella all her life....

SugarPlum10 · 05/10/2021 09:51

Going against the grain here but I like Isabelle, it looks prettier to me. I think she’ll have her name spelt like this a lot. We considered Isabelle for our DD but were put off by the many variants.

CagneyNYPD1 · 05/10/2021 09:46

I have an Isobel. Chose that spelling because of the Scottish connection. Less frilly and we do pronounce it slightly differently with the o rather than the a.

We know a number of girls called Isabel, Isabelle, Isabella. They are all, bar one, known as Izzy. Every single one.

Ginandplatonic · 05/10/2021 09:45

Isobel is my favourite spelling, by a long way, then
Isabel, then the overly frilly Isabelle.

MrsBertBibby · 05/10/2021 09:40

Isobel is best, then Isabel.

Isabelle I dislike. Too frilly.

MondeoFan · 05/10/2021 06:58

Isobel is the one

hoppyhandstands · 05/10/2021 06:42

I’m an Isobel in my mid thirties. No one ever knew how to spell my name when I was growing up, it’s definitely not the standard spelling. If I say it in Starbucks or whatever they’ll write Isabel or Isabelle. I like this spelling though and think it suits me - less frilly as you say OP.

Firsttimemama2017 · 05/10/2021 06:35

I have an isobel and it is often spelt Isabelle which is definitely more common around here.
And as others have mentioned, very popular (although that doesn't bother me). She is one of 3 in her reception class!

MsTSwift · 05/10/2021 06:30

Don’t do it - she will join the vast legions of Izzy’s. I have two secondary age girls and Izzy and Eve type names are soooo common they have lost any appeal they once had. It’s like bring chalked Claire or Sarah in the 89s.

LaBellina · 05/10/2021 06:26

I prefer Isabella, because it was the name of a beloved family member.

riromay · 05/10/2021 06:20

@DramaAlpaca

Depends what you want.

Isobel is the Scottish version
Isabel is Spanish
Isabelle is French
Isabella is Italian

In English, all are pronounced the same.

My personal favourite is Isabel, mainly because it's the least frilly.

How are Isabella and Isabelle pronounced the same? One has a very clear "ah" sound at the end
Theoldwoman · 05/10/2021 06:18

Isobel 100%

I prefer Isabel.

Isobel would be IS-o-bel.

Isabelle would be IsaBEL (emphasis on last syllable, as it's French)

Ijustcametosayhello · 04/10/2021 14:05

Is a bell really necessary on a bike

Hummingbirdcake · 04/10/2021 14:04

Isobel or Isabel.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 04/10/2021 14:03

I prefer Isabel, and not just because it's my middle name. I'm mid 40s.

thesearesexpeople · 04/10/2021 14:01

I love Isobel, it's a beautiful spelling. I find Isabelle too frilly.
