Hi there,

Looking for some suggestions. My husband & I are struggling this time. We both have names we love but nothing we can mutually agree on. Would love some inspiration.

Thanks

Manon, Noemi, Adeline or Delphine, all beautiful French names

EntreMummy · 02/10/2021 16:41

Camille is one of my favourite French names (nn Mimi) but I didn’t use it for my DD as I hate the way it’s pronounced in English.

Think lots of names fall into this category though - it’s a shame!

I must confess I'm a little bit puzzled though. If you want French names then surely the best place to ask is on a French forum.

Madeline or Delphine are both lovely.

The trouble is, what English speaking people and French speaking people consider nice names may vary a lot, not be currently fashionable etc.

Sylvie as suggested is a case in point, to English speakers it's a pretty fresh variation of Sylvia, to French speakers it's their auntie's name, and quite dull.

It seems that the fashionable baby names in France are things like Cappucine, which just makes English speakers think of 1. coffee 2. monks and possibly 3. monkeys, and it just seems odd. I think Appolline too, or something like that?

Jade is surprisingly one of the top baby girls' names in France. To Brits it just seems like an 80s name, not very classy. But I presume the French are pronouncing it differently, like Zhad with a short 'a' maybe? I looked on a French names site some time ago, and Jane was one of the names suggested 'but not pronounced the English way' I think it said (my French not brilliant). But it IS an English name, isn't it? Why not just use Jeanne then, if you don't like the correct pronunciation? But then we pronounce names like Genevieve incorrectly I suppose.

RSGR · 02/10/2021 16:07

@EntreMummy That’s the main reason why I have reservations about Genevieve.
