Misty May

Just want to get thoughts from women who don't know me...

May was my grandmother's middle name so that's a definite.

I really like the name Artemis but it seems so grown up and old so I'm thinking Misty for a nickname.

Does Misty May sound too cutesy?

Thank you for your input!!!! Smile

@ignatiusjreilly

Poor OP. It can't be nice to have your favourite names ripped to shreds on here!

Can I make some other suggestions for unusual yet lovely names?

I have Misty on my list for a potential daughter, and also the following names, in case you're interested OP.

Cherry
Tallulah
Neveah
Shelli
Candela

Cherry-Mae has a lovely ring to it.

But if you love Misty May, OP, I think you should go for it. MN can be so snobby about names sometimes with their 'high court judge' test but I have a nephew called Reggie-Aron who works in a very professional role.

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 11:58

Artemis May Thoughts.

Artemis - people will think it's a boy's name because of Artemis Fowl
May - filler middle name

Artemis Thoughts is ok, Misty Thoughts is ok
Misty May is too much

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/09/2021 11:51

Sorry OP, but it’s terrible.

I always think does this name pass the solicitor test. Would I go to a solicitor called Misty May. No.

People will call her Misty day.

Miss Misty May surname. Nope.

I’m not being unkind, your intentions are lovely, but it’s a terrible name for a child. I say this as someone with an unusual name.

What ever happened to "be kind"?

What happened to not trotting this out every time someone says something they don’t like.

Misty May is way too cutsey. It’s terrible. Not a big fan of Artemis although I did hear one being called in soft play recently.

Cutsey names are fine for toddlers and pets, not for grown ups. So I would use Misty as a nickname only.

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 11:50

Flaming June

Viviennemary · 28/09/2021 11:50

May is ok. But Misty sounds like a 1960s comic book character. Dire.

trama · 28/09/2021 11:49

You say May is your grandmother's middle name - can you not just use her first name if it's going to give a less twee end result?

MirandaBlu · 28/09/2021 11:48

Artemis is one of those relatively rare names where the female form is the original and male usage and various male forms are dervived from it, traditionally to honour the goddess and/or ask for her help and protection - e.g., that a child would grow up to be a great hunter. Artem/Artemy is still used in Russian and other Slavic languages, and Artemio in Italian and Spanish. I think it's most often been Artemus or Artemisius in English.

I think Artemis May is fine. Misty could be fine as a nickname for a little girl but a lot of women (not all) would grow out of it. I wouldn't want it or use it as a full name. I went to school with a Missy, short for Melissa, and she did get a lot of "that's my cat's name!" Grin

There's a character in American Horror Story called Misty Day. Interesting back story: she was ostracised by her Pentacostal community, who tried to burn her alive when they discovered she was able to raise the dead

NorthernLion · 28/09/2021 11:47

Misty May sounds like a weather forecast.

grapewine · 28/09/2021 11:47

Sometimes I wish parents would consider that their children grow up to be adults with jobs. Misty May? Come on.

hauntedvagina · 28/09/2021 11:46

Sorry OP, it's a no from me. Could only be worse if your surname was Morning.

Ramayquaza · 28/09/2021 11:45

I love it OP!

I have May-Lotta on my own shortlist Smile

Babydust13 · 28/09/2021 11:44

@toastofthetown no I meant that there is kids with a lot worse names people seem to call children all sorts and these definitely aren't the worst I've ever heard

willowwhite · 28/09/2021 11:42

I think the name is just gastly. A total jynx on the poor kid. She will turn 18 and make a rapid dash to the stripper pole.

ThatLibraryMiss · 28/09/2021 11:42

First thought was Play Misty For Me, old film about a psychotic woman obsessed with Clint Eastwood's character.

I thought Misty Blue, a lovely song but I would not saddle a child with Misty.

What ever happened to "be kind"?

Indeed, it would not be kind to call a child Misty May. Or Mae.

Namethoughts92 · 28/09/2021 11:42

Thank you for all your opinions!
I'm not sure about Misteeq it sounds like the x men! Can't call a kid after the x men and I think she's a baddie isn't she? Shock

I was thinking call her Misty day to day although now I'm thinking Art or Artie might work. Definitely not Temmie...

Middle names are used when they're in trouble aren't they? I will try yelling different options across the park at the weekend.

Artemis is a great name and clearly a girl’s name.
I don’t know where you’re getting the ‘t’ in Misty from, wouldn’t Missy be a more natural shortening, or Artie if it comes to that?
You won’t have control over her nickname forever, and May is a nice generic middle name.

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 28/09/2021 11:39

@garyclovis I don’t think it’s very kind to inflict a name like this on a child.

Claphands · 28/09/2021 11:36

I personally love all those names!

jobsagudden · 28/09/2021 11:33

I love it!

SummaLuvin · 28/09/2021 11:29

It's very very twee, but you already know that and you like it. It's not my taste at all, it does sound like a fairy name.

That being said, would anyone actually call her Misty May? If May is her middle name, and Misty her nickname, then the vast majority of the time she will simply be Misty. Or do you plan on using both names, like a hyphenated one?

ofwarren · 28/09/2021 11:27

Artemis May is fine. Misty is a cat's name though, or a stripper.

myheartskippedabeat · 28/09/2021 11:26

Misty May sounds like an extra from the worst witch 🧙‍♀️
Friends with Mildred Hubble

Only if you want her to sing at the Grand Ole Opry.
