Opinions on final two baby girl names

Me and my husband have really, really struggled to agree on a girls name. We have it down to two choices we both like (but are quite different).

We like India / Indie and Mya.

We actually met backpacking in India 11 years ago so there is some significance for us but I know it still has negative connotations for some so that's my only reservation. I do like that it's not very common and she's likely to be the only one in her class.

Mya I just love the sound of. I also like Maya but think there is more margin for error and confusion on pronunciation. We like the My-uh sound rather than May-uh. However....I know there are quite a few Mayas, Myas, Mias etc.

I guess we're torn between a popular name (but popular for a reason I'm sure!) or an unusual name that could have negative reactions for some....

We already have a 3 year old Cassandra / Cassie...also quite different to the two names!

I know an Indigo who gets called Indie. Sweet with Cassandra, too.

Cassandra & Indigo
Cassie & Indie

Because it’s weird to name a child after a place where your country committed genocide.

Ari7890 · 28/09/2021 11:27

@DressedUpAtAnIvy When you say its unusable in some circles do you mean because of the association with colonial India / British raj? Or do you mean due to future uncertainty as I guess with the latter that could be a concern around any place name...e.g. war could break out in Florence or Vienna!

India 100%

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 28/09/2021 11:22

As she will potentially use the name for 100 years, I wouldn’t call a white English child India. It’s unusable in some circles already and may be completely so in her lifetime.

I love Indie ☺️ but maybe that's because I've seen too much Bluey recently !!

SquigglePigs · 28/09/2021 10:39

I love Indie

LittleMysSister · 28/09/2021 10:38

Indie for me :)

I think India is pretty but does come with it's problems/judgements.

Mya is also pretty but this name and similar variations are so, so popular at the moment. I also agree with you that there is scope for mispronunciation and your little girls having to always correct people.

Immaculatemisconception · 28/09/2021 10:33

India ✅

AdaColeman · 28/09/2021 10:32

I’d be a bit miffed if my name was Mya, while my big sister was called Cassandra!

ILoveShula · 28/09/2021 10:31

India nn Indie.
Mya falls into the Mia/Maya/May etcc trend and seems dull. You have a connection with India. Indie and Cassie sound good together

daisypond · 28/09/2021 10:26

India is unusable these days. I wouldn’t inflict that on a child. I do know one who changed her name from that when she was about 12. So it’d have to be Mya. But I’d feel a bit short changed if I was called that when my sister was called Cassandra.

A friend of mine has just named her baby India Rose, I think it's beautiful

SlidDownTheElephantsTrunk · 28/09/2021 10:13

Indie !

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 28/09/2021 10:11

India/Indie, so cute and not as popular, she won't be another Mia, Maia, Maya, etc.

Doglicks · 28/09/2021 10:07

Love India, one of my fave names.

Cas112 · 28/09/2021 10:04

India/Indie all the way!
