DH and i have both chosen Aylah for one of our top 5 names for DD but not sure whether to pronounce it as A-lah or Eye-lah. DD is due in November so got a bit of time to choose and would love for your opinion,
Thanks.

Neither of those ! Id say it Ay-la as that's what it says

AmItheonlyonehere · 27/09/2021 19:45

@eddiemairswife

Why do people choose names they don't know how to pronounce?
That's exactly what I came here to say😂 I'd pronounce it Eye-la but how can you both have chosen a name when you don't know how to say it? That is odd.
WTF475878237NC · 27/09/2021 19:35

Did you want Scottish Isla? Or Hebrew/Turkish Aylah? In Turkish Ay is pronounced eye.

They all mean different things but are pronounced vaguely the same.

I was thinking this too. Surely you realise it is a name with particular heritage and meaning and therefore you need to choose accordingly, not at random.

millzcrawf · 27/09/2021 19:33

Ay-La

Chunkymenrock · 27/09/2021 05:30

Ailer

manhattenrain · 27/09/2021 05:27

Ayla is pronounced Ay-lah. It's quite popular in Australia.

Eye-lah would be Isla.

Elisemum · 27/09/2021 03:13

I’d pronounce it “Isla” but may I ask, if it’s one of your favourite names than should you not know how to pronounce it?:)
And why are you considering a name that you can’t even pronounce it? I’d say go with any other from your list, not this one.

thelastgoldeneagle · 26/09/2021 21:56

A-lah is a prophet.

Ayla is a proper name - dd has a Turkish friend called Ayla, but it might be better if you had a cultural link to a foreign name.

thelastgoldeneagle · 26/09/2021 21:53

How can you like a name if you don't know how to say it? 🙄

I've seen Ayla - pronounced ay-la not eye-la (that's Isla).

Nc4post99 · 26/09/2021 21:53

@Bancha

Surely if it’s one of your favourite names you know what it sounds like?!

I would pronounce it ‘Ai-lah’. But it’s absolutely awful.

Yikes that’s a spiteful thing to say. Op is probably double checking how other people would pronounce it not asking for help how to pronounce it.

OP id pronounce it Eye-la

SeanChailleach · 26/09/2021 21:49

Ayla in Persian:
آیلا
I think that's most of them.

SeanChailleach · 26/09/2021 21:44

Here's how to spell the name in a few writing systems:

Ayla is a name for Girls
The meaning of Ayla is halo of the moon and figuratively it means beautiful, brilliant.

Ayla In Arabic : أيلة
Ayla In Urdu : یلا
Ayla In Hindi : अयला
Ayla In Bangla : আয়লা

felulageller · 26/09/2021 21:05

Just spell it correctly or she'll grow up with everyone thinking her parents can't spell!!

OuiOuiBonjour · 26/09/2021 21:01

I've only ever heard it like Isla. It's a well known name amongst Turkish and Arabic people. Like Aisha which is eye-sha.

careerchangeperhaps · 26/09/2021 20:57

I know an Ayla and it's pronounced the same as Isla (eye-lah). I'd pronounce Aylah the same TBH (but you will still have some people assuming it's A-Lah).

QuickieNCforthis · 26/09/2021 20:54

Muslim background. We pronounce it roughly the same as Isla. To me it's an Arabic name. Eye-la.

TwinsandTrifle · 26/09/2021 20:53

If all the people saying Ay-lah, mean the "Ay" rhymes with Hay, and the "lah" is like La Perla, then I too pronounce it Ay-lah. Aylah the wailer.

It's terrible, and in no way would ever be pronounced Eye-lah, because, well, that's Isla.

What is it with the names at the moment. Pick one you know how to pronounce at least?!

MrsFin · 26/09/2021 20:47

@eddiemairswife

Why do people choose names they don't know how to pronounce?

It's weird isn't it?!

OP has probably heard Isla and doesn't know how to spell it.

Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:45

Although I wouldn't worry about other people spelling it differently I have a normal name that can be spelt 2 ways and people constantly spell it the other way or a made up way. Doesn't matter what name you give someone will always come with another spelling even when the name is in front of them.

Wtf86 · 26/09/2021 20:43

I know an ayla what Ailah or Isla? Depending on how you want it pronounced?

Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:42

And yes a lot of people can't spell it I've seen it spelt as Alya or Allah even when replying to a message where I've actually wrote her name.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/09/2021 20:41

@eddiemairswife

Why do people choose names they don't know how to pronounce?
So that they can whinge on here when everyone else from Grandparents to Nursery staff get it wrong for the next 5 years.
Changenameforthis43 · 26/09/2021 20:40

I have an Ayla pronounced Ay-la. A lot of people think its pronounced Isla. She's 4 now and the health visitor still calls her Isla I haven't bothered to correct her Grin.

Buttons294749 · 26/09/2021 20:38

The Turkish Ayla is eye-la. It is s proper name and not "made up"
