Old/ unusual Irish boys names

We are Irish living in Ireland and considering an Irish name.
Not one of the "common" names like Cian, Sean, Liam, Cillian, Peadar, Micheal , Fiachra, Conn, Fionn, Oisin, Naoise etc

Not one of the ones that have become popular recently as family/ friends have got there first!
Eg Odhran, Rian, Tiernan, Tadhg

We are thus leaning towards an unusual/ old name that is not commonly used. I will get a book but as the weekend is coming up I'd love to have a few suggestions

(Excuse my lack of fadas!)

Grma

I love Nessan - especially if you have a Limerick connection
How about Garvan?
I know someone called Ceallachan (can't do fada on last a) nicknamed Cal.

I'd have love to have used Eoghan Roe

I'm not sure if it is still in print but Irish Names for Children by Patrick Woulfe is a great resource - it comments on which families/areas used the names, provides a list of old irish saint names by month/day and also provides the irish "equivalent" of common english names.

Thank you to everyone else too. A lot of the Mythological names I like but
Ferdia - killed by his best friend 😢
Setanta - a big name to live up to?

I also like Ruadhan but know about 3 already and I like Luan but would it always be associated with Monday?

@LifesNotDoneYet I think it's a beautiful name but I cannot get the association of it being a second name as well. I always thinking of the comedian Tommy Tiernan.

JamMakingWannaBe · 17/09/2021 19:41

My County Kildare grandad was Terrace.

We've got Lorcan, Conleth, Tiernan and Darragh on our longlist.

Has Tiernan become really popular? We're in Scotland and it's not common here.

generalh · 17/09/2021 19:35

Padraig...my son was to be called that until I realised he would be like a famous golfer too! Lol!
