Thoughts on Miriam?

I like it but is it a bit wet?

The nicknames are super cool. Miri, Mira, Mim, Mimi…

EllaDisenchanted · 09/05/2022 17:03

Ah sorry posted on wrong thread!

EllaDisenchanted · 09/05/2022 17:03

Very common name in my community (orthodox Jewish). I'd assume you were also Jewish. The nickname were Miri is more common for younger generation.

GroggyLegs · 18/09/2021 18:12

Indeed @SE13Mummy, infact, I should have shares in Tinyme.

It was lighthearted - never in a million years would I think that is a valid reason not to call a child a lovely name.

E11en · 18/09/2021 17:07

I also like Muireann / Mirren but that's a different name.

E11en · 18/09/2021 17:06

I like it. I like names like Esther and Miriam.

SE13Mummy · 18/09/2021 17:04

@GroggyLegs

Unlikely to be found on a pen or keyring in national trust gift shop.

Depends whether this is an issue you are prepared to tackle with five year old Miriam.

These days it's so easy to get personalised things made that having a name not available on keyrings doesn't mean they'll never be able to get a personalised item. My DDs have both coped without being able to buy personalised plastic items in seaside gift shops and have survived into their teenage years. The names on those things are often pretty outdated anyway; the last things I saw were bracelets with names such as Sarah, Laura, Rebecca, Rachel and Chloe. All perfectly fine names but very 1980s as a collection.
Happenchance · 18/09/2021 00:51

I don't like it. Miren sounds similar and is less "wet".

NotAnotherPylon · 18/09/2021 00:47

My cousin is a Miriam. I always thought it was a beautiful, timeless name.

xprincessxjanetx · 18/09/2021 00:42

I'm not keen

Beautiful classic name

Cindie943811A · 17/09/2021 21:59

A charming name

peaceinourtime · 17/09/2021 15:31

Miriam is a nice name.

Comedycook · 17/09/2021 07:51

Really dislike it...reminds me of a really frumpy friend my mum had when I was a kid

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 17/09/2021 07:49

Love it. It was on my list, but DH ditched it.

OverTheWater · 17/09/2021 07:46

Love it. As above, such a strong name with a lot of history. Mary to me is "wetter" than Miriam. I too would wonder about Jewish heritage although it has a long history of Christian use.

Difficult to make it work with an M surname though - you'd have to be Miriam Margoles to pull it off.

daisypond · 17/09/2021 07:41

I like it, but I might assume you were Jewish - the ones I know are. Similarly with Mariam - I’d assume you were Muslim, as the ones I know are.

Amdone123 · 17/09/2021 07:38

I love it, too. It's beautiful. I taught a Maryam ( she was from Bahrain). I think of her ; she was so lovely.
I understand people saying it's old fashioned. But it's a classic for me. It's far lovelier than some of the other old fashioned names floating around.

reprehensibleme · 17/09/2021 07:31

Lovely name. Feminine but not twee/fussy. Uncommon but not 'out there'. No pronunciation issues. Lots of good nicknames (know a Miriam who goes by 'Mivvi' which always reminds me of ice cream - she's pretty cool so that works Grin.

CorvusPurpureus · 17/09/2021 07:22

I live in the ME, & it's super popular here (Mariam even more so - I don't think I've got a single class that doesn't have a Myriam/Maryam/Mariam/Miriam in it, often 2 or 3!).

So if you ever consider emigrating to anywhere hot & sandy, be aware that she'll instantly go from having a cool, unusual name to having the popularity equivalent of Olivia or Emily...Wink

I think it's a fantastic name. Agree the associations & the -am ending make it strong. I'd definitely go for it.

FizzyDibdab · 17/09/2021 04:33

Love it and the other similar names: Marianne, Marion and Maryam.

EishetChayil · 17/09/2021 01:58

Gorgeous.

If we have a DD2 she will be Miriam.

CaitlinEJ · 16/09/2021 16:02

Unfortunately the one is know is a really horrible person, but if I didn’t know her I’d probably think it’s beautiful.

SirChenjins · 16/09/2021 15:13

Love it 😊
