Sylvie or Selene?

Which do you prefer? I also quite like Selena.

I love names that have a faintly mystical vibe but aren’t too fantastical or fey either. If you have similar names in mind, please offer them up! Star

Sylvie but I am biased as I have a Sylvia, who goes by Sylvie/Sylv.

All really beautiful, elegant choices that aren't overused.

But Selene might have pronunciation issues if you want it pronounced the original Greek way (most UK peeps will instinctively say Seh- leen instead). And Selena could have spelling issues if that matters (Selina). Only issue I can see with Sylvie is that it's dated in it's native France, but that doesn't really matter in the UK.

Sylvie

@peaceinourtime

Sylvie is fine, to use Seline make sure that you spell it as Celine the traditional way. I knew a Seline who was Turkish and it didn't look right spelt Seline. Also you and her will be forever correcting the spelling.
Celine is not the traditional way, though. It’s the French way of pronouncing a different name.
Ninasister · 13/09/2021 19:51

Selene. Gorgeous name
Sylvie is a bit frumpy to me

SeriouslyISuppose · 13/09/2021 17:50

@Unsure1983

Selene is suh-LEE-nee not prn like Celine.
In Greek, sure, and maybe in many other languages, but the English Selenes I know all pronounce it Suh-LEEN. More or less identically to the English Celines I know, who don’t pronounce it the French way.

@Seesawmummadaw

I’ve only ever seen Selene spelt as Celine.

They are worlds apart imo. Sylvie is classy, Selene isn’t.

Selene is a Greek name - goddess of the moon. It’s not pronounced like Celine, which is French.

I really like Selene, but not Celine.
cheeseisnice · 12/09/2021 22:20

I have a nearly six year old Sylvie. Never met another. I love it.

freelions · 12/09/2021 21:59

I prefer Selena (or even better Serena) to either Sylvie or Selene

  • Selena is better than Selene
LouLion · 12/09/2021 21:56

I love Sylvia, Sylvie could be a nn? Selena is better than Selena, but much prefer Serena and Sabrina. I love Rowan, Willow and Hazel as other tree related names. Or if you want celestial, how about Lyra or Phoebe?

daisypond · 12/09/2021 08:22

Selene by far.
Not Sylvie. Definitely not Seren.

LiveSimply · 12/09/2021 07:08

Sylvie :)

Velveteena · 12/09/2021 03:08

For some reason Celine is so much more appealing to me than Selene. Maybe I'm thinking of the fashion house.

GidgetGirl · 12/09/2021 00:56

Love Sylvie - the name of my favourite French 60s singer, the gorgeous Sylvie Vartan. And an excellent song - Sylvie by Saint Etienne.

StartupRepair · 12/09/2021 00:53

I almost went for Sylvie. Ended up with Celia.

Snugglybuggly · 12/09/2021 00:46

Love Seren

Snugglybuggly · 12/09/2021 00:46

Neither

ThePunnyMonster · 12/09/2021 00:39

I like Sylvie. I also like Seren that a pp suggested.

Bortles · 11/09/2021 22:58

Sylvie. But like Celine (Before Sunrise anyone?)

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 11/09/2021 22:39

Or there's Cynthia. Not one you hear a lot these days, and actually really pretty.
