Polly?

Thoughts on the name Polly? I was rather shocked to see it has never been that high on the UK charts. Highest position was 184! I like that it is not overly ‘out there’ but still surprisingly not that popular!

Thoughts? :)

One of my favourite books as a child was 'Polly and the wolf' about a very brave and clever girl who kept outsmarting the wolf. Always thought of it as a powerful, pretty name after that Smile

PumpkinsGalore · 11/09/2021 22:12

I like it. Although of course, if she's a small child she'll be called Polly Pocket! 🤦🏼‍♀️💖

Unsure1983 · 11/09/2021 20:37

I would hate to be called Polly and therefore i would have to say no. It is very sweet for a child but I would hate to have the name as an adult.

MeredithGreyishblue · 11/09/2021 20:32

DS 2 would have been Polly!

allycat4 · 11/09/2021 20:31

I love it but - showing my age - think of it as a diminutive of Mary (even more specifically Mary Ann)

ellenpartridge · 11/09/2021 20:28

I like it

bloominglovelyorange · 11/09/2021 20:13

Absolutely love it
Love that it's familiar but never been too popular, a great choice

IVflytrap · 11/09/2021 20:10

@HungryHippo11 No, almost certainly not these days, but there may well have been more Pollys-who-were-registered-Mary in the earlier 20th century. We first started publishing baby name statistics in 1904. Smile

Chickydoo · 11/09/2021 19:19

Gorgeous!!!!!!

SingingSands · 11/09/2021 19:15

Fab name.

35andThriving · 11/09/2021 18:56

I like it. Another name I really love is Patsy. I think that has the same kind of vibe.

HelenaJustina · 11/09/2021 18:40

Like it, I know a great one in her 40s.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/09/2021 18:35

I'm 34 and two of my closest friends are called Polly. It's a great name.

DramaAlpaca · 11/09/2021 17:52

I love it. It looks as if it should be cutesy, which is my pet hate with names, but for some reason it's not. I think it's feisty and strong.

HungryHippo11 · 11/09/2021 17:49

@IVflytrap

It's OK. Does make me think a bit of parrots, lol. I prefer Molly.

It's one of the many nicknames for Mary, so although it's never been high in the charts as they only record registered names, it would have been more in use than it looks like.

I doubt that many Pollys these days are short for Mary.
Nuuktown · 11/09/2021 17:46

Love it

SionnachRua · 11/09/2021 17:07

Oh I hate it, one of my least favourite names. It's so weak, wet and meek.

Cleverpolly3 · 11/09/2021 17:04

Great name 😉

eddiemairswife · 11/09/2021 17:00

We used to sing 'Polly Oliver' at school.

loveinthe90s · 11/09/2021 16:50

Such a great name. Under-used in my opinion. I always think of Pollys as very cool, breezy kind of girls.

In the same category I would put Cherry which I think is an equally fabulous and slightly off the radar name.

PutOnAHappyFace · 11/09/2021 16:47

I kinda don't think it suits adults. The few Polly's I've met haven't liked their name as they thought it sounds babyish.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 11/09/2021 16:45

I immediately thought of polyamorous (I'm not) but maybe that says more about me.

Sharobaranik · 11/09/2021 16:43

I always liked the name Polly but I never had daughters, they all saw sons and what I like the most about Polly is how happy she sounds.

Kanaloa · 11/09/2021 16:39

It’s ok, I prefer Molly. Makes me think of parrots and Pollyanna.

DotDotDotDotDot · 11/09/2021 16:30

Polly is a sweet, vintage type name. There are a lot of nursery rhymes about Polly though thinking about it.
