If you have or know an Alexander, what is he most often called?

Help! One names on my list for DS is Alexander. But we already have an Alex in the extended family (I have a huge family so a lot of the classic or popular boys names are already used). It's not a close family member/someone we see regularly and I prefer the full name or Xan/Xand as a nn anyway.

BUT in your experience are Alexanders nearly always known as Alex?

Definitely Ali or Sandy here or sometimes Lex

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 18:54

Ned means 'non educated delinquent' in Scotland.

I'm in Wales, but yes thanks, it could be an issue if he moves there when older which is one of the reasons I've taken Edward off my ever shrinking list (although he could be the full "Edward" if that happened - I wouldn't use Ned as a given name, as much as I like it).

A few Alexes, one Ali and one Xander.

santabetterwashhishands · 06/09/2021 18:52

My partner
Everyone calls him Alex and I call him Al but he does like it when people call him Alexander and that's what he introduces himself as 🤷‍♀️

vdbfamily · 06/09/2021 18:48

One Ali/ Alex and one Xander

Is Xan pronounced Zan or Zarn?

Where I live it will most likely be "Zan" as most people seem to say "Ale -zan- der" - although I do have a soft spot for Pointless "Ale- zarn -der" Armstrong so it wouldn't bother me if people did pronounce it "Zarn".

don't like Ed/Eddie/Teddy, prefer Ned

Ned means 'non educated delinquent' in Scotland.

Is Xan pronounced Zan or Zarn?

I so nearly went with Alexander because I adore Xander but just wasn’t sure it would stick as Alex is so much easier. He got it as a middle name instead,

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 18:29

Thanks for some more replies, much appreciated again Flowers . It does seem like Alex tends to be the go to nn (in England/Wales at least, which is what I'd guessed) but that I could probably push for another nn if I introduced it from day one/that's what he wanted himself at school. Really interesting to see a couple of you know a Xan!

In your situation if his name is causing so much angst do you think you might not be better off using a different one?

I completely see your point but my problem is I seem to have a naturally very classic/timeless naming style and many of them have been used already in my large family (George, Henry, Jacob, Mark, John/Jack, Robert, Thomas, Frederick, Peter, Joseph, Benjamin, James, Theodore, Owen, Daniel, Luke, Christopher...) and some of the ones that haven't, I'm not sure they sound great with my surname.

....Or I'm being a fussy so and so like with Alexander and like the full version but not the most common nickname eg. Edward (don't like Ed/Eddie/Teddy, prefer Ned), Nathaniel (don't like Nate, prefer Han), Matthew (don't like Matt). I'm awkward, I know! Grin

One Alex, one Xander and one Alexander.

lljkk · 06/09/2021 17:43

Al (21 yo)
Alex (19 & 44yo)

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 06/09/2021 17:22

The one I know goes by Jack ' His middle name'

Tbh a nickname doesnt have to derive from their actual name, my dds pet name is Betty, her brother gets Ethel.... In your situation if his name is causing so much angst do you think you might not be better off using a different one?

mawbroon · 06/09/2021 17:15

Alec or Sandy. Scotland

tiredanddangerous · 06/09/2021 17:15

I know quite a few (work in a secondary) and they are Alex or Xander. Alex is most popular.

Ralph871 · 06/09/2021 17:15

Sandy

IveShaggedSomeMingers · 06/09/2021 17:15

I don't know him, but there's one who goes by the nn Boris day-to-day but is Al to his siblings.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 06/09/2021 17:14

1, early 30s Alex
2, late 20s Al

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/09/2021 17:13

I know two - one aged 15 always known as Alex ( and has been since birth ) and another age 22 who has always been Alexander - very close friends occasionally call him Al.

romdowa · 06/09/2021 17:11

The one I know is either called Alex or ally.

Phyllis321 · 06/09/2021 17:09

Alex.
I call him Shmalex. Grin

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/09/2021 17:09

The ones I know are Alec, Eck, Wee Eck or Big Eck and Sandy.

bonbonours · 06/09/2021 17:05

I know a teenage Alexander who always went by Sandy when he was little but at secondary school changed over to Alex. Bear in mind that you can only really control nicknames when they are small.

For example (not my real name) I am called Elizabeth, my mum hated Liz and always called me Beth. But at 16 I started being called Liz and now everyone calls me that.

So don't choose a name if it will upset you for them to use a different nickname later.

Thesearmsofmine · 06/09/2021 17:03

I have an Alexander, known as both Alex and Xander.

Dizzymaclizzy · 06/09/2021 17:00

We have an Alexander and definitely didn’t want an Alex. We called him Alexander or occasionally Xander but it never really felt right.
As he has got older he has become Xan.
We have always said when people call him Alex and even school now call him Xan.

MissBridgetJones · 06/09/2021 16:55

Zander.

I love it can be shortened to Sandy x
