Am I the only one who thinks this name is stupid?

So, I just met a family who named their daughter Isla-Skye. Which literally sounds like Isle of Skye when you say it out loud. Am I the only one who thinks it's so odd to give that name to a baby? Or did it just catch me off guard?

Also, they were in Florida but the Dad sounded English or Australian...

It's a paint colour from Dulux.

Tlollj · 11/09/2021 17:50

I’m being a bit slow here I think but what’s wrong with jade white?

LowlandLucky · 11/09/2021 16:20

I knew a Anette Curtain, a Holly Day and a Jade White.

HeronLanyon · 07/09/2021 14:46

Oh kitten yes ! The wedding would need to be in black and white.

KittenKong · 07/09/2021 12:34

Maybe Holly would marry Mr Land and double barrel it, thus completing the original sign...

HeronLanyon · 07/09/2021 12:32

Re Holly Wood I only very recently was watching something which had the Hollywood sign on and it struck me fit the first time ever that it meant Holly wood. I want to see the wood of Holly in studio city or wherever.
Duh ! I frequently have these insights decades later. My dp despairs of me when I mention them.

LadyCatStark · 07/09/2021 11:55

There was a girl in my reception class called Holly Wood. Now, there’s no way her parents didn’t know what they were doing! She was expelled within the first year and sent away to a special school (this wouldn’t happen like that today, I don’t recall her doing anything particularly awful), poor kid she had a reputation for having a stupid name and being the “naughty kid” all by the age of 5!

KittenKong · 07/09/2021 11:29

I've just come down
From the Isle of Skye
I'm not very big and I'm awful shy
And the lassies shout when I go by
Donald, where's your troosers!?

interest12 · 07/09/2021 09:30

@RoseAndRose

If you haven't heard of the Isle of Skye, where did you think the name came from?
I would think it's just a name...Isla Skye
interest12 · 07/09/2021 09:29

@interest12

I've never heard of Isle of Skye. I think the name is fine
Australia

I don't know anyone with an odd name. I'm so disappointed because some of these are crackers.

aaahshoot · 06/09/2021 23:21

I knew of someone called Jasmine Tee. I thought that was a really lovely name.

CommanderBurnham · 06/09/2021 22:29

Maybe they have a sentimental attachment to the place. I've heard some lovely stories behind unusual names.

Nosferatussidebit · 06/09/2021 22:23

@DoucheCanoe

I know 2 sets of twins called Isla and Skye.

I've also met a Skye-Bleu and a Marie-Celeste.

Teaching in Coventry, I came across several Skye-Bleus (nickname for the football club for those unaware).
Vitallyli · 06/09/2021 22:08

I like Tia Maria 😂 if they are not from the UK Isla-Skye is fine

@MsMeNz

I think it's a bit funny but ok. Tbh u hate any name double barreled for first name. Esp ones with Mae/may sounds very chavy/red necky. I don't think the kids like it either. Often introducing themselves as only their first part of their name and cringing at their parents who insist they use the the thing.
You know, judging people as ‘chavvy’ based on having a double barrelled name is really poor form. I dislike this nasty habit of referring to things as ‘chavvy’ in a really unpleasant way, because generally those things you call chavvy are inextricably associated with the working classes.

@mum2jakie

I know a Paige Turner Confused
😁 I have joked to my husband about calling our baby Paige (we are Turners!) Can't believe someone has actually done it!
Nibletmum · 06/09/2021 21:01

I worked with an Ivor Hardwick Grin

moynomore · 06/09/2021 20:52

Hardly anyone in Florida will get the reference.

VulvaTeeth · 06/09/2021 20:51

My son's at school with both a Jack Daniels and a Jack Russell. Those you can probably laugh off as adults but I've also worked with a child called Tequila and, really, when they went to register the birth certificate, someone should have had the balls to say "Don't be so fucking silly."

I was at school with an Alisa Craig (in Scotland, so in context! I also knew a Ryan Ayre). I suppose her Australian cousin would be called Aires Rock...

Cissyandflora · 06/09/2021 20:21

@HeronLanyon

cissy yes - we’d probably need as many as 100 but if we were ever to drum them up I’m sure we’d be thanked for having sorted this out. It’s hard being a mover and shaker, eh ?
It’s very hard yes. But once we get the first 100 on board the system will get up and running organically and without the need for our consultation and people will wonder how they ever did without it.
TatianaBis · 06/09/2021 19:05

Sing me a song of a lad that is gone over to Isla-Skye.

longtompot · 06/09/2021 18:58

@ProfessionalWeirdo

Well, it certainly fails the Tesco Test.

Before naming your baby, you need to imagine how it will sound when your child wanders off in Tesco and you have to shout their name out loud.

Haha I did that with my dogs name, though not round Tesco, but imagined what it would sound like in the park. Or at the vets.
