I really like unisex names. And im swaying towards Rio for my baby girl. Wanted to hear people's opinions please? Or any other unisex name suggestions please 😊

@toastofthetown

In 2019 there were 230 boy Rios born but only 8 for a girl. In the mid 90s Rio was used for girls more than boys, but it's risen for boys and dropped in popularity for girls. Maybe as the Duran Duran song faded from public consciousness. Personally it fails my 'would I like this to be my name?' test, but that is personal.
I imagine Rio Ferdinand had some influence on the rise in popularity as a male name.

Definitely a girls name!

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Didn’t Simon Le Bon nearly drown making that video?

We knew one, she would be 17 now. Just a girl, like any other.
Mother worked at optomotrist, dad is a postie. Very ordinary.

Mybalconyiscracking · 06/09/2021 07:02

I think that, very unfortunately you will be setting her up for a lifetime of people’s prejudices!
Ria is lovely, as is Tio.

A young female Rio in cabbage van once delivered the Ocado order - she was lovely, but I was expecting a male.

@Evvyjb

As a teacher, that is ALL I would be thinking, ALL of the time

Yes I now have this song playing round in my head after reading the OP 😆

I really like it, but I'm quite fond of short names ending in o at the moment.

The o ending makes it masculine. If you have a language where girls' names end in o, okay, otherwise, it is like calling your daughter James or Lucas. Or Antonio, Alessio etc.

In Spanish at least, that's not always the case. Both Consuelo (which means solace) and Rosario (rosary) are common girls' names, while also being masculine common nouns. A given name deriving from a common noun doesn't have to match its linguistic gender to the person. Rio means river and is masculine gender but that in itself wouldn't necessarily preclude it being given as a name to girls. (I think it's simply that it's not traditionally used as a name in Spanish for girls or boys).

I had a friend at school called Reo, short for Rhiannon.

Ria would be okay. But probably not what you have in mind. Rowan? Aurora?
I think Yarrow would be a good name for either boy or girl. It's a wildflower, small, pretty and tough. Hth

TheVolturi · 05/09/2021 20:23

Ahhh no! Rio will always be the hot gangster from Good Girls to me!

GreyhoundG1rl · 05/09/2021 20:12

@Mumtotwofurbabies

Frankie is a nice unisex name
No, it' not nice.
Frazzled2207 · 05/09/2021 20:08

She def dances on the sand

Mumtotwofurbabies · 05/09/2021 20:07

Frankie is a nice unisex name

user1493494961 · 05/09/2021 20:04

I'd sway towards something else.

Meredusoleil · 05/09/2021 19:03

I know a girl called Rio. But I do prefer it for a boy!

Rio isn't unisex...

Elisemum · 05/09/2021 18:58

I kind of like it. Just not Ria as she could be called diarrhoea unfortunately. I know a girl that named her daughter Grey which at the beginning I found ridiculous but now I’m used to it

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 05/09/2021 13:15

All I'm seeing is Simon Le Bon hanging on to a yacht in a white suit.

Joystir59 · 05/09/2021 13:12

Rio sounds good time girl to me.

Happy36 · 05/09/2021 13:09

Her name is Río...

Givemethatknife · 05/09/2021 13:08

@IceLace100

Argh this is going to be mean....

But...

It kinda sounds like a stripper name. Sorry!

Yep. Downmarket for either boy or girl.

Ferdinand or Fernanda are nice names. Or Cleo or Leo.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 05/09/2021 13:07

Rheo Grin
I think it's ok for a girl actually. Has a kind of Juno, hero vibe.

Chachachawoo · 05/09/2021 13:06

Don't like Rio. Really dislike Ria reminds me of diarrhea

campion · 05/09/2021 12:29

I would assume Rio - boy, Ria - girl.
